Working near Somerset MRT - where to live / schools

Post by Andy b » Sat, 16 Apr 2011 6:34 pm

Hi, I am new to this forum, but could do with some advice.

I have the chance of a job which is based near Somerset MRT. I will work unusual shift patterns sometimes finishing at 10pm and starting the following day at 9am.

I have a 4 year old daughter.

Looking for somewhere to live, close to a pre school, which is less than only upto 20-30 minutes away by public transport.

Budget for housing I have is upto s$4000 per month

Thanks

Working at Somerset you could practically reach anywhere in Singapore on public transport (MRT) within 30 minutes!!!

You should be able to find somewhere round the corner from where you work - River Valley, Orchard, Central area - for around that budget if you want to stay close to work to minimise the travelling time thus resulting in spending more time with your daughter.

As for pre-school I cannot comment on that but sure someone else will be able to give you some recommendations.

Many thanks for your help.

The desire for living close by is the odd shift patterns I would work.

I'll check out some of the distrcts on rental websites

Thanks again

You could also use google maps or gothere.sg to check for directions and a rough estimate of travel time--private or public transport.

You should be able to get a 3-bed condo in Toa Payoh for $4k p/m* at Oleander Towers, or maybe at Trellis Towers (certainly a 2-bed in this one).

Time to Somerset including walking to Toa Payoh MRT? 20-25 minutes?

No expert on schools, but Toa Payoh was the second 'new town' suburb after Queenstown, so the town planning means that every neighborhood facility is provided and within easy reach.

* we vacated there a year ago and were paying $3200p/m, though I understand rents are going back up again.

This is really good info.

Just for reference, I am UK based at the moment. The job would be to start at some point in July.

I have previously worked in HK but did so a little naivey and was not well informed enough.

Hopefully things work out and I and my family will experiance Singapore.

If there are any other practical advice you can give, please do .

Thanks again.
