Voting in NSW election

Post by macaroonie » Fri, 25 Mar 2011 1:32 pm

Aussies out there, have you voted in the NSW election yet at the high commission? They are closed today and tomorrow!

Apparently if we are overseas on election day we won't be fined for not voting - but if we are on the electoral roll we will be fined for not voting! Gosh it doesn't make sense. Won't most of us be on the electoral roll but can't vote for being overseas?

Confused -anyone else in this predicament?

You have missed your chance you could have done postal vote or Ivote or gone to Embassy in Singapore but all closed now. You will be fined now but you can take the penalty notice and ask for exemption based on you being overseas with proof of copy of passport date out of the country I suppose. Take yourself off the electoral role is the easiest way in the future also can help if you get caught for tax residency issues in Australia. Keeping yourself on the electoral role can be seen as having intention to move back and any claim for non tax residency may be in jeopardy.

You should be fine... Australian immigration keep records of when you leave or enter the country, so if an election is on and you're shown as being out of the country, they won't chase you.

p.s. good result down there, now NSW Labor is gone I may consider returning!
