Do I need to serve army?

Post by modonaut » Mon, 14 Mar 2011 4:01 pm

Hi guys,

I am 25 yrs old male, from Malaysia.
I studied in Singapore since primary 1 and all along, I was identified as foreigner and using Fin no.

And then, I graduated from local University 2 years ago...got myself a job and PR status.

Right now, I have decided to go for conversion to Singaporean.
But what puzzles me is the question of whether I need to serve for NS?

It would be hell for me if I were to resign from my current job and bond 2 years with the army.

I would like to seek option from anyone who had the same situation as me.

Thank you

Yes I was born here.
But I wasn't granted citizenship or PR because both my parents were not PR all along.
So now I was considered 1st generation PR.

From your reply, I assume that MINDEF would consider PR who is 2nd generation rather than those who is 1st generation PR regardless of what age group you are?

If you got your PR before 18 as a second generation PR - then you would have been asked to serve NS

If you were born here, then it is a different case

Maybe Mad Scientist can clarify .. My exposure is limited ...
I am sorry I cannot provide you this info as my information is likely to mislead others and much worse than you ecurelix. Ask this nick pacads, he seems to know a lot more
