Some questions on moving to Singapore!

Post by defrancod » Sat, 05 Mar 2011 8:36 pm

Me and by family are considering moving to Singapore, but we have many, many questions. First of all we are a family of 5, 2 parents and 3 children, 16, 13, 10. We are Venezuelan and have been approved or an O1 visa in the States, but are now wanting to leave. So here go the questions: How hard would it be for us to immigrate to Singapore? What area should we live in thats near a good school? With a 400k income what would be the best apartment size? What would the monthly costs for food, transportation, electricity, etc... be? Is Singapore very stressful? Will the kids have to serve in the military? How much would a maid cost? Are things generally more expensive than the states? Is there a nice beach? What do you think the weather feels like throughout the year? Could the 15 year old start a business? What does Singapore lack? What does Singapore excel in?

Thanks in advance!

I am sure you know how to help yourself, and that a lot of the information you are asking for is already available on this forum or other Internet sources (search functions do wonders nowadays!).

> How hard would it be for us to immigrate to Singapore?
Depends very much on your skills and demand for them on the Singapore job market. You cannot move here without a job!

> What area should we live in thats near a good school?
Schools exist all over the island. Good international ones are expensive and have waiting lists. The island is small and nothing is far.

> With a 400k income what would be the best apartment size?
I assume you mean S$/year. With that budget you have all the choice you want.

> What would the monthly costs for food, transportation, electricity, etc... be?
Depends very much on your lifestyle and choices. Serch this forum for LOTS of discussions.

> Is Singapore very stressful?
Yes. But it also depends on your company's style.

> Will the kids have to serve in the military?
If your family gets PRs (and the kids are male): Yes. Otherwise No.

> Are things generally more expensive than the states?
Some cost much more, some much less.

> Is there a nice beach?
No, but it's easy to fly to one.

> What do you think the weather feels like throughout the year?
Hot and humid.

> Could the 15 year old start a business?
No.

> What does Singapore lack?
Space.

> What does Singapore excel in?
Hyper-modernism, and business, business, business.
