Should I have Child Born in SG?

Post by slyfly » Sat, 26 Feb 2011 10:56 pm

I am here in SG on a Dependent Pass (under my husband's employment pass). I am pregnant now and will give birth in a few months. I am considering whether I should give birth here in SG or go back to my home country?

My husband has insurance that can cover my hospital expenses as well. Can someone tell me how the hospital system (especially the maternity type operation) is here in SG? Which hospital is the best for that type of operation? Are they expensive?

Also, if my child is born here. Would he/she get SG citizenship right away? And would that give me (and my husband) PR status here as well, automatically, since in some countries, that's the case.

Any insight would be appreciated!

That is entirely up to you. Singapore has excellent maternity facilities here and KK Women's & Children's hospital is top notch.

As above. Somewhat so, but the private hospitals are even more expensive, if you don't have insurance (do a search of this board, it's been discussed numerous time in the past couple of months/years.

NO and NO.

Any insight would be appreciated!

I'm from the UK and had my boy here in February 2009. From listening to my friend's stories of giving birth back home and my personal experience here, I feel the service is way better here. Of course we have to pay for it (or in your case your husband's company does), but I felt very looked after both during and after my pregnancy.

He has a Singapore birth certificate but we had to get a British passport for him within a certain amount of time, which is easily extendable if you are having problems with paperwork etc.

The cost of having a baby here can vary massively depending on the type of birth you have. A friend of mine recently had a natural delivery at Gleneagles, 1 bedroom, 2 day stay, cost about $3-3.5k. Me on the other hand, I went to Thomson (and would do again) to have a C section, had to stay an extra day due to my baby being jaundice (4.5 days), and had to have an expensive anti D injection (I'm O Neg) and our bill was $9.5k.

If you go on to any of the hospital's web sites, they display the costs of various types of delivery and rooms available, this does not include your Drs fees though.

Thomson Medical Centre, Gleneagles, Mount Elizabeth, KK, NUH are hospitals that people have mentioned when telling their birth stories.

SMS is right though, this topic has been done to death so just do a quick search in the top right of the forum page and you should find everything you need to know.
