Racial Diversity at Tanglin Trust

Post by mothbhai » Sun, 20 Feb 2011 12:01 pm

Hi,

Need feedback on Tanglin Trust. There are many stories floating around about lack of diversity and racial bullying at Tanglin Trust. Would love to hear from Tanglin Trust moms if there is any truth to those stories. I really loved the school. And the only thing thats holding me back is the diversity issue. My kids are 2 and 6 yrs old. The older one is at OFS right now. Would appreciate your feedback. FYI, we are of Indian ethnicity.

Thanks

MM

This is based purely on my observations during a visit there recently (I am white British, my wife is a Singporean).

Tanglin as you may know does have an 60 to 70% British students goal - meaning that as a result the school is simply going to be whiter than most Singapore schools - though it didn't look noticeably different to SJI or Dover Court. You don't say if you're British or not - if you do, and want the children educated in the British system prior to moving back it's a good choice. Diversity can mean a lot of things though - is your concern the (lack of) racial diversity within the school? It certainly struck me as more diverse on those grounds than the schools we visited in Essex a couple of years ago.

I don't think the school would tolerate racial bullying - but others may have a more practical experience of this. Tanglin is a relatively large school, and try as the school, it's impossible to stop all children acting like little shits all the time. I'd be more concerned with how the school handle allegations of bullying - racically motivated or otherwise - than with any specific incident that happens.

Those are just my thoughts,

T.

My 12 year old says he doesn't think there is any there (he's a Brit pupil there), he says if there is it is stamped on immediately
