SC question!!
SC question!!
My mom is a Singaporean whilst my dad is a Malaysian. I was born in Singapore but i had lived 17 years of my life in Malaysia. Trips were made to Singapore during this period of time only during the Chinese New year and Christmas period to visit relatives. I held a Singaporean passport since "birth" but I also managed to get a Malaysian Passport and IC when i was 12years old. I only got my Singaporean NRIC made just in time for me when I came back to Singapore to serve NS. I have completed my 2 years of service and is currently studying at a local uni in Singapore. I might be dropping Singapore citizenship at the age of 21. Would I still be able to study and work in Singapore still as a foreigner? My parents are however very keen on making Singapore their home to reside in (they are still in Malaysia) so I guess being able to travel back to Singapore is a must for me.

Yes you are able to gain employment here under EP as you have been seen contributing the National Security of SG . To regain SC is impossible . To visit and work here under various pass is no issue. BTW what age you finish NS and when you are going to complete your Uni ?

Precisely if that is what you said, then when he renounce his SG citizenship he will lose the subsidies for Uni studies as he is no longer a Sger when he renounce at 21 but still studying in Uni.x9200 wrote:He was 19 in 2009 so in 2013 he will be 22/23 as he suggested he is not 21 yet.
If he completes his studies and hold on the SC citizenship he has to renounce M'sia citizenship. That is the first part .
The second part is he has to serve 3 years In camp before he can renounce as he has past the age of 21
So he is between the hard surface and the rocks

" The second part is he has to serve 3 years In camp before he can renounce as he has past the age of 21 "
Does this mean another 3 years of reservist callbacks if I renounced after I am 21?
Also, if I renounced my Singaporean Citizenship would I have to pay back the subsidies that I had already gained when I studied at the local uni?

Your numbers does not add up
18 yrs serve NS finish at 20. But you said you finish NS when you are 19 ?? You mean you serve at 17 ???
Now you are doing Uni , your course may run for at least four years. Either way you will be either 23 or 24. So which is which.
Do you have dual citizenship or not now ?
Tell me all these that I can go forward

Ok thank you , I find it quite strange that you serve at 17. Not in my time though , I guess time is changing.DaerthE wrote:" The second part is he has to serve 3 years In camp before he can renounce as he has past the age of 21 "

Here is the deal
By 21/22 you have to decide which citizenship to hold. If you decide SG then you have to renounce M'sia and take a pledge of allegiance to SG.
If you do the opposite or you did not take the pledge or chose to ignore ICA call then you lose SG citizeship. That is the first part
Once you no longer a Sger, you have to apply for student pass to continue your Uni and your Uni subsidies is taken away. Whether you have to pay back the first two years of your Uni when you are Sger , I do not know but chance is very high you have to pay back.
Student pass to Approve Institution has to be applied thru MOM. easier said then done. You need to show that you can support yourself or your parents income is min 2.5 K per month might be queried by MOM
So not as easy as one might see
Now if you chose to complete your Uni then renounce SG, you have to completed 3 cycle of NS reserve before you can renounce.
The positive side is you can still gain employment here after that if you find a job in SG
Understand ??
