Just arrived - where to live/meeting other mums

Post by jlma1972 » Mon, 10 Jan 2011 1:01 pm

Hi

We arrived in Singapore on Tuesday. My husband started work today. I have got a 3 year old and baby due in May. Staying in a pretty rubbish apartment near Little India, but thankfully moving on Wednesday to somewhere better for a month.

We've started to look at places to live. I'd like to be fairly central, ie near Orchard Rd but seems like further out like East Coast you get more for your money. Just wondered if anyone lives out that way and what's it like? I was worried it might be a bit isolated.

Anyone recommend any other areas? I haven't got a clue!

Also I don't know anyone over here with kids, so wondered where's a good place to start to meet other mums?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Janine

Hi

We live on the East Coast (Costa Del Sol) and I have a 2 year old. Although the East Coast is a bit out of town, it doesn't take long to get anywhere in a taxi. We love it this side of the country as we like to spend time walking/cycling down the coast. I do however have a lot of friends who live in town also.

If you are in town at the moment, I recommend going to Royces (they're on the web). It's like a big indoor toy room and costs $12 per hour and you will need to pay a joining fee of $50. I always buy a block of 10 sessions for $100. It's also a good place to get chatting to other mums.

I've met a lot of other mums through play gym classes like JWT but there are others called Little Gym (Marina Square & Orchard Road) and Gymboree (Tanglin Mall, Harbourfront).

Have you started looking at a pre school for your 3 year old and have you found a hospital and doctor for the delivery of your new baby?

Hi, thanks for your reply and for the advice. We went to Royce's today but I didn't have enough more or bank card on me so we left! Will check out the other places you recommended too.

Was thinking about preschools but as we don't know where we'll be living hadn't got very far. Any advice on good ones would be appreciated.

Re hospitals, probably Mt Elizabeth. I've got an appointment with Ann Haggarty in Feb, but seeing a guy (Dr Loh Foo Hoe) in the meantime. I had a lot of complications with my first, so hoping Dr Haggarty is a good bet.

Janine :)
