When an employer asks a foreigner/ex-pat job applicant, how long do you see yourself staying here, what is your response?

You want to tell your employer to be that you are seriously considering staying here for longer but did not make up your mind yet. This will of course also depend on your job relations to be mutually satisfying. IMHO you should not say that your only dream is to stay here for life as they may try to put you right away on a local contract :)

I am on a DP and during my interview the employer asked how long I'd stay and if I'd be "following my husband around" (exact words :D) after 2 years (his EP is valid for 2 years although the position he works in is permanent).

I told them it would very largely depend on how my career moves during these 2 years and whether I find working here to be fulfilling. Also reiterated that moving here was a "mutual" decision and that as an when the question arose I would have an equal say in the matter.

Seemed to work okay cause they hired me. :)
For those who fight for it, life has a flavor the sheltered will never know.
