Bringing nanny (from Philippines) to USA

Post by swissonion » Tue, 28 Dec 2010 6:21 pm

Dear All

My apologies if this question has been discussed before. I am posting this on this forum as I was hoping that someone had experience with this.

We live in Zurich, but will be moving to NY next summer. (We are American.)While here, we were very lucky to have a fantastic au pair who came from the Philippines. Because of Swiss law, she was able to be with us for one year, but then had to return home.

I would love to bring her over to the States to work for us again, but have been told that is a very difficult thing to do.

I am working with an au pair agency in the hopes that she can acquire a J1 visa, but the au pair agency has told me that they have not really had any success in the past in the Philippines (due to flight risk from the consulate's perspective, I am assuming.)

Does anyone have any tips? Experience? I thought that I might even need to hire an immigration lawyer?

Thanks![/i]

I would have thought a Forum for Expats based out of the 'peens would have been a better idea.

As a maid I could say the chance is as good as "ZERO" but not quite zero ..

I was in the US Embassy for some other work, when I heard the visa officer practically making an Indonesian cry when she was applying for a visa to go with her employer of 12 years .. and all guarantees from the employer and everything moved nothing in the heart of the Visa officer - she kept telling the employer to 'stay out of this conversation or you will be thrown out' and kept asking the maid 'what is the guarantee you will return back to Indonesia' and kept saying 'there are millions of nicer bosses in US .. '

Good Luck !!

Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but I thank you very much for posting: we had, pretty much, decided not to pursue as I kept reading examples of what you had witnessed.

You just confirmed for me that our chances are too slim to risk it.

Thanks and have a nice day! :D

Or you could pursue an option which somebody claimed they did - bought a 40,000 US$ aparment under the maid's name in Manila, waited for six months, and then went to the US Embassy and showed the apartment plus a sum of money in her account

well, there are variations of the above - but if she is so good you can think of something haha :D) :D)

Please dont quote me .. but apparently that ploy did work for a couple of people .. dunno whether to believe it or not ..

And also apparently worked for a filipina who was desperate to go to US - she sold all her sundry assets and booked in a condo .. and the rest - she says is history (but I doubt this as well)
