Work Visa Criminal Question

Post by S2GE » Fri, 24 Dec 2010 2:13 am

Greetings, this is my first post.

I have an opportunity to move to Singapore with my current job this summer. I have to put in and go through a lengthly process with my company to get the position internally.

Not that it is an excuse, but I lost my only brother in my late teens and while not an outright criminal, proceeded to drink and drink and drink and drive. That being said I racked up three DUI's over a 5 year period. None were in an accident and none hurt anyone thank god. However, I live in a state in the US which automatically gives a felony for the third DUI. It has been 7 years since my last arrest and six since the conviction. I don't drink like I used to and have since paid all fines and completed all probations.

I have read multiple threads in this forum and have come to understand that Singapore most likely will not consider DUI's as a serious crime.

I have a few questions. Considering my record of habitual DUI's and the felony is there any chance that I would get the work visa?

Secondly, is there any type of time period that is looked at on the Visa app or is it a lifetime record inquiry?

If I initiate the process through my work and am declined it would cause my immediate manager and myself a little embarrassment. I am considering not even applying for the position, despite a longtime dream to live in Singapore.

Thank you for considering my question. I realize it is an old thread question, but mine has a considerable twist.

Your questions

Considering my record of habitual DUI's and the felony is there any chance that I would get the work visa?

Crime in Singapore are divided into two ; Traffic or Criminal Offense which again divided into two for the latter ; petty or serious.

All DUI and any road offenses including parking are into Traffic Offense category.

When under DUI and caused grievious hurt or death then it became Criminal Offenses under Serious Category

Secondly, is there any type of time period that is looked at on the Visa app or is it a lifetime record inquiry?

As your passes are renewable every one , two or five years depending on different category, yes the vetting process may be look into your past history. The answer is Honesty from the beginning. Once you cleared this hurdle, you do not have look over shoulders for the years to come

Thank you all very much. I have a few weeks to think about it, but if a DUI with no accident is considered a traffic offense, regardless of the felony, I think I'll give it a shot.
