Just moved to Novena/Newton area

Post by leslieng » Sun, 12 Dec 2010 8:47 am

Hiya,

I just relocate to Singapore from UK staying near Novena/Newton at Arte at Thompson condo. There is a lot to get used to as I live in UK for over 20 years! Especially the humidity!!
Appreciate some advice in terms of food shopping near my area (no Tesco, sainsbury or Asda here:(). Also whats the best SatNav to buy and where to go for some local streetfood.
In terms of communication gadget, I go for Starhub package with home phone line, broadband and cable TV. I will get Iphone from Singtel. Good Idea?

Much appreciate.
Leslie

Did you try actually going outside and having a walk around the area?

Velocity (Novena Square) has a Cold Storage at Level 1, this is the closest you will find to asda/sainsburys etc. However, at Square 2 (the other mall behind Novena Square) has an NTUC Fairprice on the top floor - think of it as Co-Op, with more local fare. Across the road from Novena and down Thomson Road a bit is United Square too, lots of kids shops there and another Cold Storage which is just a little larger than the one at Novena.

If you want more expat style food, hunt out the MarketPlace (in Paragon or Tanglin Mall) or Jones the Grocer (Dempsey Hill & Mandarin Gallery).

If you're going with Starhub for TV/Internet, why not go with Starhub for your iPhone (may I suggest a Windows Phone at this point too :p). You get bigger discounts having all three services with one provider, and with Starhub you can call UK landlines for free via the 018 service. Last time I looked into it, Singtel still didn't offer any kind of free calls to the UK.

How about Giant?

Why not look for the nearest Giant supermarket if you like tesco....can take a taxi back after shopping if you are not driving.

I have slowly adjusted to NTUC / NTUC finest now but still go to nearest Giant if I feel like buying a bit more...

Having just moved from the district the above is your all in one full answer.

It even stays on topic, and hits all the Q's. Maybe CG should be given some kind of rosette  :)

leslieeng,

I'm relatively new to Singapore as well and am considering moving to Newton/Novena. How do you find the noise situation with the surrounding construction work? I'm staying temporarily at a condo with a brand new office being constructed bang opposite and I can't sleep in on the weekends! Also I viewed a Newton apartment at Amaryliss Ville. The condo was fantastic in terms of the facilities, accommodation etc ... but it was surrounded by two very loud construction sites. Maybe this is just a reality of living in Newton. Would love to hear yours and others opinions.

Thanks

If you fancy doing groceries in local wet markets, check out Owen Road and Whampoa Drive. :D
