Maybe my comments went overboard, but I always have a tough time balancing those who are desperate to get to Singapore, and then complain that Singapore is a country of slave-traders :D :D

Why Singapore ?? Why not Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia .. :D :D

PS: Exxxtraaaa smileys added to emphasise that it is an off-the-cuff comment :D
Because Singapore is a first world country, equivalent to the Switzerland of Asia. It is head and shoulders above the other 3rd world countries that you list.

My husband is concerned that the maid will run away with her passport. Can anyone out there give me some advice please?

As for passport, what is the exact reason a maid needs to keep her passport with herself ??

Common sense
Its their PERSONAL property and not YOURS.

I also know maids who earn salaries in 1,000 $ and above, and are allowed to travel when the employer is out of town, and they have been with the employer for 20 years or more .. and are almost a part of their family. And when one of the maids in Iloilo lost her house in the storms, the employer paid her 10,000 $ to put up a new house .. and the employer are just government servants here ..

One of the maids even flew to Australia, when the employer was on vacation, and when I casually asked her whether the employer approved her flying away - she showed me the text from her employer, telling her that she can be away as long as one of her friends water the plants ... :D :D

That is called "TRUST"

As for your next post about 'Its their PERSONAL property and not YOURS' Yah, I gotta agree on that, to some extent .. so - does your maid go to Malaysia every weekend ?? :D :D

Hat, coat, umbrella - me is gonna leg it out . :D

And therein lies the culture clash and problem, since for a great many SGns life is a constant battle to get one over on someone else. Trust probably doesn't often get a look-in.

Sort of brings back to my mind the words of a great person - life is acceptable, until you reach the destination, and then you realise there is nothing 'enough' in life :D

Hi ex-pat,

Sorry this is abit off topic, but I'd like to know if you know of any shop with good collection of Thai movies for rent? If yes, please drop me a note or email me at [email protected].

I posted in another topic of yours but I thought I'd try my luck here.

Cheers,
Mike

The only way a bible is going to help prevent a maid from getting pregnant is if she holds it between her knees...

Proper BB tags have been re-inserted into the text of the previous message.

This often happens when posters don't use the 'Preview' button before hitting the 'Submit' button. :-|

You are also held responsible if she does a runner, gets pregnant, and most anything else
I have seen this stated many times. What if your maid does leave or get pregnant? What does the responsibility entail for the employer?

The employer gets a 5000 dollar fine and I believe it does say possible jail sentence, I assume the jail bit kinda applies if you the employer is guilty party? We got fined with our first helper she became pregnant with her ex-employers husband!
