On my first visit there on Saturday, I found it quite difficult to find a Coffee shop selling beer!!!

Other than that it seemed to have plenty of shops n things.
Life is short, paddle harder!!

I just lived there for 2+ years and thought it ideal. It's not expatville, a plus. It was built as a 'new town'.... so all the facilities are within walking distance. 3 stops from Orchard....

Thanks guys,
I'm relocating faster than I had anticipated. My company will provide accommodation for the first two weeks but that will leave me in a pickle in the middle of Christmas/New Year. I'd imagine it will be a nightmare trying to arrange accommodation during this time. Any info on short term rentals in the area?
Thanks again :D

I'm not sure that SG gets a 'Christmas slowdown' as such... and can't see that impacting you renting a place.

Anything short-term is more likely to be in the CBD, and area (central business district) in my opinion...

p.s. I liked Toa Payoh, as it is right in there and 'real', but not quite 'heartlands' real ;). Some days I'd go home and tell the wife, 'Hey I saw three whiteys today!' hehehe

If you go to Fork & Spoon yes it is as dry as a bone. Indeed it is halal.

Mysteries of Toa Payoh include how can say about 60-70 mobile phone and accessory shops stay in business all situated within the Mall.

It's business as usual over Christmas and New Year so you will be fine, if you were moving during Chinese New Year that would be different

I've never quite seen it as in TP. The wonder there never seems to be anybody in the shops...

If you do not want to go too local and live in a HDB flat (public housing), there are a couple of condominiums. Or commute into Toa Payoh using the underground. Newton is an alternative place to rent a place with lots of private apartments and a few more malls.

Toa Payoh update

Post by Tsilivi » Fri, 28 Jan 2011 12:23 pm

Well guys I've been here for a month now and every little wander around makes me love it all the more. It is indeed NOT expat-ville but has most things an expat would need..well me at least!
I managed to rent a room in a condo next to the HUB. Takes me 5 mins to walk to work and there's shelter from rain all the way. The array of food is immense..cheap and more expensive palates available. Found a little sushi shop which is fresh but cheap..and 3 MRT stops from Orchard. I've even found a couple of bars Waves (under OrangeTee) has a happy hour from 1pm till 9pm and Paddy's Point is open all day. I'm a very happy bunny!

Good to hear.

Is you condo one of the big two? Oleander and Trellis?

And I'm curious where this sushi place is!

Sushi!

Post by Tsilivi » Sun, 13 Feb 2011 5:53 pm

Hey,
Nipped in yesterday and picked up a card. The place is called Joujou Sushiya and is in the little food area behind the 711 outside the mall..close to Paddy's' Point. I got a platter for a work do yesterday and it was fab. Think it's a family outfit. The chef said he'd previously worked at the Shangri-La Hotel. Not the prettiest place in town but fresh and great for taking home. Nice and friendly.
Moved into Trellis Tower. A lick of paint wouldn't go amiss and the games room smells of sweaty feet but we've learnt to load ourselves up with air freshener for a game of pool  Not a bad choice of condo all in all :D
