Deplorable customer service- handyman/contractor

Post by jrenspie » Thu, 18 Nov 2010 10:21 pm

I wanted to pass along my recent experience with a handyman here in Singapore. It's a case of very poor customer service and want to spread the word in hopes of saving others the same experience.

A handyman from HomeCity General Contractor came to our apartment to hang several items. Less than a week later, one of the letters that was hung in our son's bedroom fell down. I called the company on a Monday and was told she would call me back to schedule a time for the problem to be fixed. By Thursday, I had not received a call so I had to call back. She advised me that the handyman would come on Saturday. Saturday came and went- he did not show and I received no phone call to advise of a change in schedule.

When I called again on Monday to find out why he didn't show up on Saturday, I was told that he was too busy. There was no apology for the inconvenience it caused for us to wait around our apartment. The company advised that he could possibly come on Thursday or Friday. I provided my availability and she told me she would call me to confirm the time.

No surprise here but I did not receive a call. Therefore, today (Thursday) I called again to find out when the handyman would come to fix the problem. She advised that he could not come on Thursday or Friday because he was busy and could not make it during the times that I was available.

It has been two weeks with no resolution. I have made repeated phone calls and have been clearly put off. Therefore, I asked her for a refund for the part of the work performed that was not done correctly. She argued with me regarding my request. I indicated that I have patiently waited for two weeks and I thought this was ridiculous. At this point, she told me not to yell at her (mind you I was not yelling and the strongest thing that I said was "it's ridiculous") and she hung up on me.

Since I clearly was not getting anywhere with the company, I asked my husband to contact them. At this point, all we were requesting was reimbursement of the part of the work that required fixing. We decided not to wait any longer to get an appointment for the handyman to come and fix the problem. As soon as she heard that my husband was calling in regards to my situation, she hung up on him. Yes, you read that correctly.

I am so disgusted with HomeCity General Contractors and their lack of customer service and complete disrespect for people that I wanted to spread the word. I would strongly advise against using this company for any handy-man/home repair services.

Have you taken the matter to CASE? or the Small Claims Tribunal? If not, why not? Don't you think you would be better off taking that approach rather than possibly being sued for liable for badmouthing them here without your case having be proven?
