If you have a windows box, you can rip the DVD by using a DVD ripping software. I use ANY DVD Professional - not too expensive. And then, for quick edits I will use Windows Movie Maker (which is a free download from Microsoft) . For more elaborate edits I will move over to my wife's Mac and use Finalcut Pro. But for your day to day movies and sharing with grandpa, Windows Movie Maker is just fine.
