are steel bowls safe for infants?

Post by mayali » Thu, 11 Nov 2010 12:55 pm

Hi,

I'm starting my little one on solids this week (yay :D ) and i came across some really cute bowls but they are made of steel. Does anyone know if its safe to mix baby cereal in this type of bowl or should I stick to plastic?

you're better off with steel actually, since some plastics (e.g. bisphenol-A) can leak harmful traces. steel itself should be inert; however, you may want to check if the steel is treated or coated with something else.

Oh, I hadnt even thought about BPA when it came to feeding bowls! It was only bottles that i had been scrutinizing hee hee. Will def check if the steel is traeted or coated but i dont think it was :)

Thanks for the advice.

i'm also paranoid about BPA and decided to give up melamine wares recently by changing the whole lot of tablewares for my kids to Steel ones, those with cute Disney cartoons from Korea ;p

HA! I was just wondering about the melamine myself. Where are you locating the steel ones with characters on them?

BPA is bad and very hard for the layman to tell if it is on any plastic items or not,
But take note that there are many grades of stainless steel as well, and the layman also cannot tell the difference, as the thinner type (or what i would like to call "China standard") can and will rust.

The best that we can do is to buy from reputable brands,
Cheers.

Steel is one of the most hygienic materials out there. I'd take it over plastic any day.

As mentioned, just make sure that's it's good quality steel.

yes good quality but they're for serving food only, not for boiling over the stove. i've used them everyday putting hot soup. these cartoon ones are really cute! :P

Just wondering, most of us grew up eating out of plastic bowls, and my son does now. I don't think this BPA issue was around when I was weaned onto solid food 36 years ago, so I was just wondering when I was going to start feeling the side affects, and what should I expect to feel exactly.

I'm just a little concerned as I was also bottle fed (as was my son) so have I poisoned him already or will he be OK?

Just curious.

Oh, and he also played on those foam mats for hours. No burns or breathing problems so far. I'll keep you posted.

Sorry for the sarcasm, but I feel like someone is making a load of money somewhere scaring the hell out of parents and laughing about it behind our backs.

I agree - it's like when my children were small, we were advised to start solids for them at 4 months, then a few years later it was a big "no no" and you were a terrible parent if you didn't wait until 6 months and then hey presto, they're going on about it being better at 4 months again.

It's enough to make your head spin! :???:

Chinese manufacturing products weren't as widespread as it is now 36 years ago. :P
