I would think employment in the industry would be quite a challenge, though it sounds like you may have some experience, is it enough to take on the challenge.
My first thoughts of the industry, is that it's very similar to the entertainment business, lots of PR work, and networking, it's not what you know, but who you know, to get a foot in the door.
I think it's very possible to kick start your own business, providing you do your home work, especially in the events arena, with large shopping malls.
I have visited a few shows and found them quite entertaining, and I'm pretty sure we will see more shows in the future, especially in the Casino areas.
The most of the designers are from overseas, and I would believe they use, the top creative design and advertisers here for shows to be launched.
So I suggest more networking rather than expecting to land a position, though that is my personal opinion, as i have no experience in fashion, but I do in business and I have the insight for opportunities.
Another suggestion would be to bring in something new from NYC, get someone to take on the challenge of launching their products in Singapore, I'm sure if you can sell sand to the Arabs, and Ice to the Eskimo's you can cut a deal, whereby you can work for the company in Singapore. Offer your service free for 3 months, until you get it all sorted and launch in Singapore on a profit sharing deal, or an employment contract with commission on results, you are a husband & wife team being the agents and event organisers would be a piece of cake.
There are lots of classy fashion I have seen in UK, that should be in Singapore, though it isn't, because their philosophy is on Franchise within it's own territory I know it could sell here because its sexy lingerie, little competition that i have seen here. The Victoria Secret opened last year i think it was.
I think with the economical and financial turn down, these local fashion houses will be looking for new paths to follow, and Asia is one big growth area. So sell yourself, you can both pull it off I'm sure though networking is the way in.!
