Leaving Singapore

Post by bluessmoon » Tue, 19 Oct 2010 8:51 am

I'm leaving Singapore for good...

Recently I have bought two iPhones for me and my wife. At that time, we haven't decided on leaving.

I called Singtel the other day, they said termination fee for two iPhone lines + internet + MioTv with all the charges could be up to $2000.

What happens if I leave Sngapore and don't pay the fee? I already plan to renounce my SPR and do not have any credit card debt leaving behind.

Pls help to advise. Thank you very much

As far as the iPhones themselves are concerned, leaving without paying the termination fee would be theft. iPhones are heavily subsidized, and if you get out of the contract early they want you to pay the full retail value.

$2K is a bit too much for two iPhones. We have been using Singtel lines for almost 14 months already.

I dislike the telco's policy of two-year contracts, but you knew about the contract period when you signed up. You could have bought the phone at full price with no contract but you accepted the slashed price in return for a contract, so you were a willing party to the deal.

If you default, other consumers like myself have to subsidize your cheating through higher prices to offset the business cost of bad debt. [-X

Sez you. Unlocked iPhones sell for at least S$1100, and as WIMH noted, you signed the contract.

If you're leaving Singapore by your own choice then you'll have to own up settle as part of that decision, tough.

If your company is moving you, then they should be made aware of deposits and contracts you have in place and let them pay the termination fees as part of the relocation cost.

Actually it is cheaper to just do a GIRO and let the monthly payments from the account than to terminate a contract. Just get the Iphones Unlocked and take it to which ever country you are going or just sell it.
