Post by fab » Tue, 12 Oct 2010 4:14 pm

I have just arrived in Singapore, and looking to make new friends. I have heard about Singles@Singapore from their facebook group

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=101160079948500

and hope to attend some of their events. I will let you know if they are fun.

good question

Post by DJ-F » Sat, 13 Nov 2010 1:13 pm

I only went to one event, and it was fun, but a little too small.

I usually live in Taiwan, and the group there is called 'oriented', and their events attract a few hundred people and are excellent. They rent a whole bar for an evening, including food (snacks) , but you pay for your own drinks, and they charge you about $20 to get in, but you are certain to leave with a lady / guy on your arm if you try , or with name cards if you just want to network. I think this group in Singapore should aim bigger and do the same. The more people there are, the higher the chance you will meet someone you get along with.

So, if they organize a bigger event I would go again for sure. The people I met there were friendly, but slightly conservative ... maybe it was just at that particular event, who knows. It was my second week in Singapore, I I didn't know anyone, so I tried to persuade any / all of them to come for a drink in Holland Village, but no-one said yes as they all had work the next day. So I also think a weekend event might be better.

I missed their picnic as I was busy. Hope they organize a large event soon. I have organized events before, and hope they come up with something good and are successful .....

There you go ...a very honest review.

Fabian,

A few hundred people...how many people do you actually talk to and get to know further? I guess people here are more wary...especially with the amount of weird people us gals have met.

I guess you might have better luck walking into a pub/club in SG on a Wednesday ladies night if you are looking to meet a few hundred people here.

Guess i spoke to about 20-30 people. Made friends with one English guy, and kept in touch, and also with a Taiwanese girl who ended up being friends with and still keep in touch on facebook. Also exchanged business cards with quite a few interesting people a few of whom I kept in touch with ..... The difference between their meetings and a ladies night is the volume ... I mean there is no thumping music, so real conversations take place at that kind of meeting ... you can actually talk about interesting things not just yell a few words over the loud music! Lastly, they are all real people with real lives and real jobs - no hookers, which is good.

Having said that, you are probably right about ladies nights in SG though, but I have no idea where to go. Which one would you recommend? I am a newbie here, and don't know any places to find a ladies night with real people with real jobs .....

Usually on Wednesdays I am at a spirit medium temple for my Ph.D. research, but I could miss one Wednesday to do something different.

Any suggestions welcomed ......

Ah i see...apologies i thought you were looking for more hooker type cos you mentioned "you are certain to leave with a lady/guy on your arm..."

I'm not the best person to recommend as i'm not the clubber type (other than some catching up with a friend who works as a soundman in one of the clubs in clarke quay). But there are so many pubs/clubs in Sg, you can try out a few per week in clarke quay and boat quay area and i'm sure you will get the right one ;) Having said that, i really don't think you can get to meet sincere real people in clubs...

I heard Butter Factory is really happening on Ladies Night although I myself have not been there ... Also, it is not true you will not meet nice people there ... But I guess it is like the minority ....

ladies night

Post by DJ-F » Tue, 23 Nov 2010 1:41 am

Thanks for all the info.

Wish I had time and money to go to a few clubs every week ...here is some idea of my schedule:

Monday - follow a temple visiting other temples and try interview as many followers as possible.

Wednesday - dinner with a spirit medium and his followers.

Thursday evening 8-11PM - visit a 9 Emperor God temple in Chau Chu Keng and watch spirit medium summon up underworld deities.

Friday evening 6-10 ... visit another spirit medium temple at end of green MRT line.

Saturday - templing till fairly late.

Sunday - templing from morning to evening if possible ...

That's the life of a PhD student (anthropologist).... also unfunded, so not much $$$$$$

Anyway ...having said that, if anyone here would like to go with me to a ladies night, I would love to give it a try ..... please do get in touch.....
