Looking for advice

Post by georgie » Fri, 08 Oct 2010 12:19 pm

Hi,

Like many others, I turn to the Internet for all answers, and found this to be the perfect site to seek help.

I am a PR and my husband a Singapore citizen. We both started out as PR's but my husband took citizenship. My 13 year old son born in Singapore (1997) also holds Singapore passport. We left Singapore in early 2001 and have been living in the US since. We plan to take US citizenship and will be eligible by end of 2011. My son's Singapore passport will expire in May 2012.

Not having lived in Singapore for almost entire life (he lived in Singapore only for 3 years), we believe it is unfair on my son to do NS. What do we need to do so that my son doesn't have to do NS?

- Do the parents have to sever ties with Singapore first i.e. I give up my PR and my husband renounces his Singapore citizenship before we start the necesary process
- Should we sell a property we own in Singapore and transfer funds/cpf out of Singapore?

Thanks for your help.
Georgie

You should consider not ruining your sons life, if he avoids the national service in any way, it will affect his future, if ever he wishes to visit Singapore. I'm sure MS will clarify the issue. However its most important you start to consider the problems now, it will have on your sons future.

Maybe he will just get called up into the USA military to be used has cannon fodder in the future, then you will really have screwed up. You are now living in a Country that has a lot at stake :-| You can bet there are more conflicts in the world that USA must address, than Singapore, and with the fatality rate of USA soldiers in conflict, they are going to stock up from somewhere! :-|
