Continue to serve NS after renoucing SG citizenship?

Post by arron921 » Thu, 07 Oct 2010 10:28 am

Hi guys,
I really nid help with this. I was born in 1990 and my family and I migrated to singapore in around 1996 and left singapore at 2004 to go back to hong kong to study. So i "enjoyed" about 7 years of "substantial socio-economic benefits " and they want me back for NS now in 2010. I'll be 21 yrs old next yrs while serving NS halfway through. So my question is, if i renouce my SG citizenship then, will i still be required to serve the remaining term of NS? Or can i leave immediately, becoz i have a degree program going to expire soon waiting for me in Hong Kong. Thanks guys for any help!!

Not sure how you mean by this "will i still be required to serve the remaining term of NS? "
Basically it is simple; if CMPB called you to return home to do NS. Do that . Complete your NS 2 yrs then you will get a release letter stating that you have completed your compulsory 2 yrs NS. Then you can renounce.
Once your renunciation is accepted , you do not need to serve Reservist training till 40 or 50 depending on your rank.

you cannot renounce until you finish NS. Therefore, if you are sure you will never set foot in Singapore again just default. Do not harbor any hope that you can serve a year until 21 and then renounce and save another year of NS.
