sociable yoga mates?

Post by minhwa » Sat, 02 Oct 2010 10:09 pm

no Inappropriate Yoga Guy jokes, please.

i have been learning at the community centre. while i am there first for the yoga, but my coursemates' sheer lack of basic friendliness surprised, then annoyed me.

for the entire course (8 sessions), most hardly even look at me, or at each other. so, nevermind smiling, and goodness, i wont even dream of getting a 'hello'. they stroll in like zombies, not smiling, not looking, and then when class is over, rushed for the door. its sat 12pm, what's the rush? hungry? geeze ..

no, i am not smelly or ugly. i am cordial and friendly. isnt it totally normal to expect some smiles, hellos, and some sharing?

midway, i thought it will be great to practice together outside our weekly class. we were learning more things than we can remember individually, so i thought by practicing together, we can collectively recall our classes. the instructor thought it was a swell idea too.

but, when i presented the idea to the class, .. dead quiet. half stared blankly at me, other half continued rolling their mats. it was bizzare.

so, people, .. what are your experiences like? if your yoga mate are usually friendly, pray tell which studio. if you live near toa payoh, and are interested to practice together, i am your man.

this all depends on the studio you go to, some are great, some are not friendly at all - but it is like that everywhere, personally it doesn't offend me.

if you think people are rushing here in Singapore, you should try a yoga studio in New York City. people go there to find solace and be with themselves, it is not a gym remember?

I go to absolute yoga on River Valley and have found all of the teachers to be very friendly and helpful, the classes are ususally quite full but I don't find it inpersonal. They have 2 other studios one at Telok Ayer Street and one Friven & Co. Tanglin

Has the Friven branch in Tanglin re-opened yet? I thought it was closed.

Absolute Yoga is good but super crowded.

I think it's just the way people are here. I have a package at Absolute Yoga in River Valley but I go during off-peak so it's fine. Try going into class early and waiting for the instructor...it's awkward. Silence and I'm pretty sure most of them wish they had their mobiles with them to fumble with. I've become quite use to it and expect it so I'm becoming the same myself. It's a shame, not really easy making friends in these circumstances.

Enjoying my yoga classes with my classmates

Post by Cynthiatsng » Mon, 01 Nov 2010 3:18 pm

Hi guys,

My yoga class is unlike the one that you guys experienced. I guess it is also the instructor that made the difference. When I had my sessions at True yoga, it was such that people look away when I intended to have eye contact to smile at them, it was really disturbing as I am a very sociable person by nature. However, in my prite class now, my instructor made an effort to bond us through her asana session, and everyone is very freindly with each other and I guess it helps a great deal when the class is kept small at about max 5 pax  Whatever it is, hang in there..
