Places to watch Hockey in Singapore?

Post by David_CDN in SG » Sun, 19 Sep 2010 11:32 pm

How do any other fans in Singapore get their hockey fix?

Are there any bars that broadcast games?

I found this thread, but I still need to check what information is still accurate: http://forum.singaporeexpats.com/ftopic39482.html

I stream it off the internet. It's doubtful you'd get (m)any places that broadcast it considering most games would start between 8-11am.

Much better quality if you torrent. I have only missed a handful of Canuck games in the past 4 years but I do watch them a day late which keeps me off the Canadian news websites to avoid spoilers.

Happy to show you how if you haven't torrented before.

When I say 'stream' I may not actually be doing that... my husband sets it up, I just sit on the couch. The quality has been good, and we do normally watch it after the fact, given that we are both fairly late risers.

Isn't a torrent dependent on others who choose to post the game? I think we've only found moderate success with that, given we follow the Sharks and there don't seem to be many fans outside the SF Bay Area...hence no need for posting games on the internet.

Has your DH set up a Slingbox using the outfit in Calif as the host servers? That seems the best route.

Shark games are not a problem at all. Below are hockey dedicated torrent sites that have mega-gazillions of games. NHL, KHL, Swedish Elite League, AHL...

nhltorrents.co.uk
has virtually every NHL game posted, most in both low and hi def. No kidding, they cover everything!

But you must seed or your share ratio will go negative and you'll get banned. Read the rules, especially about bonus seed points, that's the only way to keep your ratio good here in Sg with the slow upload speeds.

cifnation.org has been around longer and is a good forum for chatting about teams. Over the past season they did experience quite a loss of traffic to the uk site which is sad as this place was a great resource for many years. Once on CIF you can get access to related invite only tracker site called 5minsforfighting.com which has all the games. Of note, on this site there is a dedicated capper named Magick who does many sharks games and is known for having them ready for download almost in real-time. The guy is a legend. CIF/5min also has a better seed bonus policy so easier to keep the ratio good.

Both have Cap-calendars so you can see who is capping which games and make up your mind which one to grab. There is a much larger crowd on the uk site so generally games are posted earlier (except for Magick Shark games...). The swarms are better and even obscure games come down fast.

Feel free to PM if you have q's - and when the Sharks and Nuck's meet in the playoffs we could have a friendly wager.... ;-)[/u]

please note that bittorrent by itself is not illegal; however, the files being distributed have some dicey copyright and license issues.

so, there, a warning.
