50000 PRs: become citizens or leave Singapore?

Postby jpatokal » Mon, 13 Sep 2010 8:16 pm

I'm a little surprised to find no discussion here about SM Goh's remarks re: 50,000 PR holders being given the 'choice' of either becoming citizens or having to leave the country. Summary at Temasek Review, including "clarification":

http://www.temasekreview.com/2010/09/09 ... izenships/

Just hot air, or will this actually be implemented in some form? And any chance loosening the ban of dual citizenship at the same time, which would make full citizenship considerably more attractive/realistic?

And for reference, even currently it's possible for PR renewal to be refused if you don't have sufficient ties to Singapore, although I gather this doesn't happen very often (ever?) if you're actually living in Singapore and gainfully employed.
