Dont risk your childs education

Post by abserf » Sun, 22 Aug 2010 7:38 pm

Some recent posts are worrying - leaving your home country to come here with no idea how you are going to continue your children's education is not very wise. If your contract doesn't include school fees then make sure your $ income is enough to cover fees which range from $20k to $30k per year per child with upfront costs typically around $10-15k per child (deposit, term fee, registration). Local school may work for younger primary age children but if they are coming here from foreign system as teenagers then forget it. Also bear in mind for older children may lose their right to subsidised university places when they become non resident in their home country e.g. Uk nationals.

abserf, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has been wondering about the seeming lack of parental thought when taking up overseas positions in Singapore without having sorted out the children's schooling before signing on the dotted line. It's not just recently either. It's been going on for a good two plus years that I can see. :?

I think it has to do with the economy. It's better for mom and dad to have a job--any job--even if it means moving to SG without knowing much. It's a sign of the times. Just up to us to be as helpful as possible--good to see so many homeschoolers on the message board now too.
