Actually, it is a real democracy. It is a winner take all system. Whichever party wins the majority of the vote gets all the seats. Strange, perhaps, but it is how things work.gravida wrote:And that's what is SO DIFFERENT here in Singapore. I know, it is not real democracy, but I do not blame it. The government and people who are holding 'higher' positions are well educated and are simply doing their job, and do that so well, that it is spoiling the society. Singapore is a wealthy place thanks to them and people are so used to having money, that a taxi driver can ignore waving passenger, or a cleaning lady does not really respect her job and will not show up for the appointment etc.sundaymorningstaple wrote:Yeah, some countries even go so far as to elect them and call them president.
Looking at the average person here on the street, I am still sometimes shocked how well organized is this country.
Going back to the main topic - the fact that "white people" are here (also getting pissed of) is a sign of the overall 'clever attitude' of the country's management. With all due respect, most of Singaporeans will not be able to think out of the box or be creative, so they need "racists".
the only problem is it's all going to leeky's head. fine line between confidence and arrogance.Strong Eagle wrote:Actually, it is a real democracy. It is a winner take all system. Last election, the opposition party ran enough candidates such that, had they actually won, they would have occupied all the seats.
Can't say this is the best way, and LKY's reasoning about avoiding the ethnic and religious factionalism as is found in Malaysia, for example, is on the money.
When he makes forecasts that turn out to be wholly inaccurate. He's good no doubt about it but he's also fallible.x9200 wrote:Why is it a problem?nakatago wrote: the only problem is it's all going to leeky's head. fine line between confidence and arrogance.
Yep, but everybody is. If somebody is good this is not really a problem. It's almost like a part of the job description and in this case... I don't know, maybe it's even a part of well prepared and executed package?nakatago wrote:When he makes forecasts that turn out to be wholly inaccurate. thing is, he's treated like this great oracle, incapable of missing his mark. when he's good, he's really good. but when he misses, he's unapologetic about it and guess who pays for it. nobody dares to criticize him and those that did, ended being sorry for it.x9200 wrote:Yep, but everybody is. This discussion really doesn't need moderation at this point. The OP was a troll, All here (or at least 90%) recognized that from the get go. We only really feel the necessity to step in when we get an active troll, not a hit & run. This is more like a diversion from "where to live, how do I avoid NS, or Why was my PR/EP/WP/Marriage rejected" types of posts.Ryan_ wrote:There should be NO discrimination or stereotyping regardless what race or color of your skin in this board. What Nakatago said is very true. If you have live here long enough, you can compare Harry to Suharto to Marcos to Mahathir. As what SMS said in another thread, this is GENETIC problemnakatago wrote:When he makes forecasts that turn out to be wholly inaccurate. those that surround him has built a divine aura around him and wait for his divine wisdom to be bestowed upon them. what if he finally croaks? these yes-men would run around unapologetic about f-ups but not make up for it with the great leadership leeky has. that's very dangerous for this country--nobody seems to have prepared a transition plan.
Maybe I overestimate them but I expect it is intentional. This is all about running quasi socialistic enterprise. Nobody says it is fair but at least in this unique case seems well managed (with all the given limitation including the human errors).
again, i'm not saying he should be perfect. at the very least, they prepare something for those cases where he eventually blunders. it's foolish to expect perfection when you know you can't have it.
This is your perspective of an outsider but you are not a target here. An average Singaporean likely sees it in a different light.
EDIT: you let something go to your head, you tend to become complacent.
This is very true but this is his problem![]()
