Moving to Singapore, Advice in Schools

Post by england01 » Thu, 12 Aug 2010 9:34 pm

We are moving to Singapore in the next few months and looking at Jan term start. We are looking at International Schools and wanted to get feedback on what One World International School is like.

United World College is better...

Alternatively Candian International School is pretty good too!

What other info do you need?

Thank you for reply. The problem we have is that we will not find out from UWC or Tanglin where we are on the waiting list till minimum Oct as thats when they find out how many people leave. I am now having to think about other schools and came across owis. The kids will go into Grades 5 and 2. An english curriculum school would be ideal but have to consider others now. Any advice on other schools would be appreciated.

We looked at One World Int. School a few months back when we were preparing to move. It was a really nice school. My kids were coming from a small village school in Wales and I think it would have been an excellent choice for them and an easy transition. They teach Mandarin daily and have a very family-like feel. That said, we didn't choose it only because of the location. It is way way east and we wanted to be centrally located.

We also looked at (and liked) Dover Court Prep and Chatsworth Orchard. We ended up choosing Chatsworth mostly based on location. UWC and Tanglin had wait lists far too long for us as we are only here for 2 years. A 2 year waitlist took those schools off the list right away.

School starts for my kids in 10 days so I can better tell you how I feel about my decision in a few months. The jury is still out for now.

There are many parents who stick with being on the waiting list at their chosen school and then home school in the meantime.
You can continue to follow the same curriculum as the school, or from your home country, then when a place is available your child is ready to take it without having to exit a "make do" school.
You can hire tutors to do the teaching if you don't feel able to, there are so many great ones to choose from.
PM me if you would like any further home school advise.

If you are looking to enrol your children starting in January, you may also want to consider schools whose academic year starts in January. This might ease the transition for your children, as they'll be starting a new school year together with their classmates instead of coming in mid-way.

Two International Schools with an academic school year starting in January that offer primary education are the Australian International School and Avondale Grammar School.

You may also want to think about location. Singapore is quite small, but it can nonetheless make for quite a long commute each day if your childrens' school is far from where you are living. Do you already have a place to stay, or are you choosing a school first?

Sorry, in my previous post I mis-typed the name of the other school with an academic year starting in January. It should be Avondale Grammar School.

Apparently I didn't mis-type the name - it seems that the system is replacing the name with a "." for some reason. I'll try breaking up the name instead. Hope this works:

Some families send the kids to Dover Court etc and still wait list at Tanglin. I have known families to get a place after the Easter break or Xmas break. So keep that in mind that you might get your choice but a few months later.

Good luck with the move.

Glad I got to it before it was "santitized" as I've ordered the book! If you're interested you can PM the poster.

England01 - you didn't specify which UWC campus you are waitlisted. I know that for most, if not all grades that the waitlist is shorter at the east campus.

I think it makes a difference how well your children adjust to change. I know as they get older it is generally more difficult to change schools. But yours are relatively young and so you could put them into another International School while you wait out the waitlist.

I moved mine from ISS to UWC when they were in Grade 1 and 3 and they had no adjustment issues. It could be that some of their friends at ISS were also moving to UWC and that helped. That said, it does depend upon the child.
