NATIONAL DAY PARADE 2010

Post by taxico » Mon, 09 Aug 2010 11:19 pm

I WAS SITTING THERE FOR THE WHOLE DARN AFTERNOON... waiting for the parade baschitznitz to start...

now my skin's frickin burned to a crisp man.

i feel like there's a radiator in frunna me ALTHOUGH i have the a/c directed at my face, cranking away at 16 degrees.

and some kid swiped my free bag o' treats so i have diddly squat to show for my day. okay, i have a singapore flag pin i stuck to my cap, but that's about it.

I'M GONNA STAY AWAY FROM THE PARADE FROM NOW ON UNLESS I HAVE A GIANT HAT THE SIZE OF A PICNIC MAT (a ball cap won't do), PORTABLE ROTARY FAN DEVICE THING, LOTSA SUN BLOCK, COOLER FULL O ICE N BEER, AND A GUARANTEE THAT THE PERSON NEXT TO ME WON'T KEEP JABBING AT MY HEAD & EYEBALLS WITH AN OPENED UMBRELLA.

i hope anyone else that was there had a good time despite the heat.

happy public holiday y'all... it's back to the grind tomorrow.

After telling everyone that you wouldn't find me anywhere near the city area Monday I ended up at the Padang to watch the NDP

Taxico - not sure what time you must have got there but we left it to the last minute to leave home and got seated at 5:20pm just in time for the start. Only took just over an hour from door to seat which wasn't too bad. Wasn't too bad getting home but we got my BiL to pick us up from Dakota MRT. He had bought our 2 nieces along who promptly swiped our goodie bags! I guess if you got there early you would have baked.

I enjoyed the evening but probably wouldn't go again in a hurry, another tick against the "must do things while living in Singapore". The highlight, the SAF's Red Lions Parachuting Team landing at the Padang, they made it look so easy :o

i was told to get there by 3:30pm or i will be dragged out and shot by soldiers...

i think i settled into my seat at around 4pm - the walk in was alright, but it was the sun that got to me.

i parked at the funan tech mall, but had a difficult time trying to walk to the parking lot... i left before the parade officially ended, thankfully.

this isn't my first parade, but it's the first one at the padang! and you're right - been there, done that; never again!

it seemed great that the hosts were from the 4 "main" singapore ethnicities...

I watched the whole thing on TV from the luxury of my living room and big screen TV.

First, I was disappointed that Ang Mo was not represented during the ceremonies... kidding... the camera did actually pan to an Ang Mo or two sitting in the stands.

Second, I celebrate and congratulate Singapore on its 45th anniversary. What an accomplishment... and if I were LKY, I'd be one happy camper at what I pulled off.

Consider... 45 years into independence... many issues to deal with... and incredibly successful compared to surrounding countries and regions.

Think about the US at age 45... huge growing pains. I think that Singapore is a wonderful example of independence... and democracy... of a work in progress. If anywhere in the world has a chance to move forward, it is Singapore... and no small thanks to the efforts of LKY and those with him who have build Singapore to what it is today.

Sure... maybe some of the songs were a bit cheesy... and who knows about the military displays... and on the whole, this government does have, and is aware of... responsibilities... keeping the racial and religious peace... keeping a strong defense... I don't have any illusions that, given the right circumstances, some country might not consider Singapore ripe for the pickens.

Go Singapore... the rest of the world has a lot to learn from you... and I am proud to live here.

Taxico, how long have you been in Singapore? And yet you still get surprised by the sun? :???:

I watched the NDP at the pontoon a couple of years ago...yeah it was pretty hot outside all day, but that isn't the reason I won't go again.

After all that pomp & ceremony, I was > < this close to joining the SG military...it's very, er, rousing!
