Application on Renounciation of citizenship for NSF ?

Post by hongzai1 » Sun, 18 Jul 2010 5:48 pm

Guys, is there anyone here has a clear answer to my doubt?

I was born in singapore but lived in hongkong with my dad until i was 12. I came back here to study in secondary school and poly. i was enlisted in this year june, i am going to be 21 years old in OCTOBER and i'm wondering if i'm eligible to apply for a renounciation of my citizenship and get out of NS. I was told that i must have a pending citizenship on hand, and i have the right of abode in hongkong as i'm holding Hongkong IC. I do not have a hongkong SAR passport because i am still holding on singapore passport.

i really wish you guys can clarify my doubts here.
Thank you very much.

You cannot renounce your Singapore Citizenship until you have finished NS. Full Stop. Once you have finished your NS, if you have applied for renunciation then upon your completion of NS, it will be done. No NS, no renunciation. Pure and simple. If you run away to HK, you will never be allowed in Singapore and would be picked up, fined, jailed and upon release, you would be made to do NS. In the words of that shoe that's so popular.......

Right of abode is not a citizenship of foreign country as your foreign country can deny you or take away that privilege as they see fit. However if you are a citizen of a foreign country , to remove you from your adpoted country is IMPOSSIBLE under the Geneva Convention.
Given that reason in order for you to renounce SG Citizenship after you have completed your NS and three Cycle of National Service Reservist Duties, you have to proof to CAB, ICA and Mindef that you hold Foreign Citizenship per se.
