Giving birth in Singapore

Post by cricket » Tue, 02 Nov 2004 3:21 am

My husband and I are moving to Singapore next year and planning on expanding our family while we are there. He will have an EP and I will apply for a dependent's pass. Eventually we will also apply for PR, but will probably try to have a baby before that happens.

I read that in order for a foreigner to give birth in Singapore, they have to have a local sponsor, etc. Is it really that complicated? It wasn't clear who these rules applied to and what all is involved.

Giving birth in a foreign country is a touchy issue because it could be used as a back door method to gain citizenship/PR for the mother/child, or pehaps use the foreign govt as a long term babysitter. As with other countries, Sg has certain control mechanisms in place to avoid those issues.

As long as the parents are not planning to claim Sg citizenship/PR for the kid/guardian at the time of birth, the paperwork is just a formality.

The local sponsor for a EP holder/dependent pass holder is normally the employer. It would be really odd for the employer not to support it.

The link below is meant for social visit pass holders.. ie.. tourists or ppl coming to Sg to take advantage of the advanced medical facilities. EP/ dependent pass holders are deemed to be of a more "permanent" foreigner.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. The local sponsor still seems to be a problem, however, since the company my husband is working for is in the US (not local in SG). Does this make a difference for sponsorship?

Oh.. I think u would have a bigger problem trying to get an Entry visa rather than giving birth.

See this earlier post and the suggested method to gain a long term Entry visa.

Anyway.. even if u are in Sg as a social visitor and giving birth, the embassy or High Commission in Sg can act as the "local sponsor".
