if you don't apply for PR, then you may be eligible for LAFH (living away from home) allowance where your costs associated with rent and food are deducted from the calculation of your taxable income.

this will increase your take home income significantly (i.e. approx 20K a year).

you may encounter some difficulties in the apartment hunt - both melbourne and sydney have very competitive rental markets.

You have to becareful about your advise. Not many Australian companies, private or public are providing LAFH allowances anymore, alot of paperwork involved ie FBT etc. There are alot of other conditions to get the LAFH, first you must be an employee and if you don't have PR, you can't work, so how can you be an employee????
