Singaporean Driving Licence with Tourist Visa

Post by expatriati » Sun, 04 Jul 2010 4:37 am

Hello.

I will be living in Singapore for the next few years but I will be residing there on a Tourist Visa, so I will not be legally employed by a company.

Can I get a Driving Licence while residing there on a Tourist Visa?

No. You used to be able to do it, years ago. (I know, I did it as I also lived here for 11 years on a tourist visa (I'm assuming you are working in the oil&Gas sector?). But they have stopped that now. (that was 28 years ago). Now you must have a residency visa of some sort. PR, EP, WP, Citizenship, PEP.

I will be self employed and working thru telephone and internet communication. That's why I will be living on Tourist Visa.

So the only option for me is to form a Singapore based company, get a workpermit and then apply for the driving licence?

Yep, but it might not be as easy as you think.

What is your connection with Singapore? Is it possible to organise a Long Term Visit Pass via that connection? Then again - have you assessed whether or not you really need a car? There is an efficient public transport system and a number of taxis - so it is possible not to have one.

Yes I want to drive my own car. There is also an other reason. When I go back to Europe I can drive with my Singaporean driving licence and also exchange it to a European one. So that's 2 reasons.

If I form a Singaporean corporation. I will get a workpermit/business visa. So I can just pass my driving exam. Right?

The catch, of course, is the easy with which you can form a Singaporean private limited. Try a search on 'Entrepass' and see what comes up.

I'm with the others. You cannot legally live in Singapore without some kind of pass... LTSVP, EP, etc. If you are in Singapore for 'several years' you need legal residence. Then... motorcycle license = no problem.

Begs the question - why? The main benefit that I can see of this is not accumulating points for misdeeds...
