Caught a cold in the gym just now!

Post by ozchick » Thu, 01 Jul 2010 7:09 pm

Is that possible?! I went to the gym an hour ago feeling perfectly fine. In fact, feeling better than I've felt in yonks!
The only cross-trainer was right in front of the AC which was set at 18 degrees. I could feel it was right on me and yeah it felt cold but I thought nothing of it. Then 4 or 5 minutes later I felt this incredible tingling in my nose and suddenly I was sniffly and now I'm back in my apartment with the tissue box and I'm sneezing and well- I think I have a cold!! All in the space of an hour?! I'm so p----- off!! How can this happen?!

Definitely SARS! Seriously
I guess they don't clean their filters enough, aircons throw out some nasty stuff if not cleaned regular. Get yourself to the doctor asap and explain you have it from the aircon at the gym and you felt on top of the world before going there.

Pontiac fever is caused by the same bacterium but produces a milder respiratory illness without pneumonia that resembles acute influenza.[5]

You're not funny! Actually, it's getting a bit better...but this was a really wierd experience. I've always thought that some people 'carry on' about feeling a bit cold for a few minutes and that they worry about nothing. But gee I'm not going anywhere near that AC again. I noticed later that there was new equipment in the condo gym today, and so everything had beem moved across, so that the cross-trainer was literally under the AC and within 1 to 1.5 meters of it. I'm hoping that I 'got away' with it. No next time in such close proximity.

Ooh Kayser...I'm trying to feel better. Tell you what- there'll be hell to pay if I get some damned nasty bug from that AC in the gym.

people often forget that viruses can be transmitted though not washing of hands, and touching surfaces (such as gym equipment, or hand railing on train)

Then some unsuspecting person uses the equipment and then rubs nose, mouth, eyes.. etc....

That's where the flue bacteria breed, I get flue every so often from my shower unit, I get these very sharp stabbing pains in one of my ears, that's how i know i have a flue virus or bacteria pretty bad, no running nose or coughing, just body aches and pains. I'm so finely tuned into my own body that I know when its on my lung too, because the phlegm is yellow.

My doc sent me for x-ray, and i was right, shadow on the lungs, a kind of pneumonia, and that's what kills oldies like me and you, if you don't get any antibiotics, so keep an eye on throat irritation and phlegm, once it turns yellow the lung is infected. Just be aware and you will be fine, but it can move quite rapid with no significant fever, if your immune system is low.

In fact I would suggest you buy some good tasty drinking vinegar, that can also sort the buggers out get the honey one for the throat!

I get flue every so often from my shower unit,

Oooh, I was reading something about that just a few weeks ago, I think it was on the BBC website - about how your shower head can be a real breeding ground for bacteria and how you should remove it and soak it in a bleachy or antiseptic solution when you clean the bathroom.

Although I think flu is a virus so I'm not sure if you'd get it from there.

the cold lowered your immune system enough such that you got an infection from virii that are already there. or your sinuses/throat/trachea were irritated enough to produce mucus. sorry, not in the medical field.

How is it now? I'm asking because recently I've started to get a bad case of the sniffles every time I run (outside, Botanic Gardens) and I googled it. Apparently there's a condition you can get which involves your sinuses getting irritated or something when you work out.

In Japan and probably Korea too, when hay fever season breaks in, people just wear those masks that were in vogue during the SARS outbreak. Just be sure to get the correct filter grade/measurement.

What people will think of you when they see you is another story.

That hay fever thing in Japan is severe! I'd heard that it can start affecting you any time and thought it was an old wives' tale - until my last 2 years there (late springtime). I have never known anything like it - eyes and nose completely streaming non-stop all day. Something to do with the cedar tree pollen. Got injections in the end as had no intention of wearing a mask and over the counter treatments would only work for an hour or so...
Anyway, we digress! Ozchick, are you recovering??
