Taxi - CBD/City surcharge

Post by misshermelin » Thu, 01 Jul 2010 9:22 am

Can anyone please specify exactly when the taxis are allowed to add a CBD/City surcharge?

I've only been in Singapore for 2 weeks, and already think I've had this added to my taxi bill on a number of occations when it probably shouldn't. Anyone know if this is common? And what to do about it?

Last week I grabbed a cab at Orchard Road, and got of at Leonie Hill in River Valley, and the cab driver insisted it was withing the "City"-surcharge area. Also took a cab from Botanical Gardens to River Valley and same thing happened. :o

Anyone care to shread some light on this?

Depending on where on Orchard Road (i.e there was a gantry close by then its designated start of trip CBD. Details below:

The CBD is demarcated by the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries in the Orchard Road, Bras Basah, Bugis, Chinatown and Shenton Way areas.
The public can check the street directory or they could refer to LTA's map of the CBD at www.lta.gov.sg/public_transport/index_pt_taxi.htm
All our taxi drivers are briefed on the locations where the city area surcharge can be collected, as well as the timings during which they can do so.
Moreover, the taxi drivers' knowledge of the CBD boundaries is tested during LTA's vocational licence tests.
The city area surcharge is reflected as part of the taxi fare in our receipts, which are available upon request on completion of the trip.
In case of any discrepancy or wrongful collection of the city area surcharge, passengers can contact our respective companies' customer service officers using the telephone numbers printed on the receipts or with LTA at 1-800-CALL-LTA.
Taxi drivers who knowingly collect the city area surcharge wrongfully can be fined up to $500 and given 12 demerit points under the LTA's Vocational Licence Points System (VLPS).

It happened to me once and I was nowhere near the CBD.
I took the cab number and called the company complaints department. They take complaints very seriously. Also, take a receipt when you can as registration details are there. It was actually the girl in the office who told me the driver had added the CBD surcharge (he admitted it) - it was just so silly of the driver because we had gone from West Coast to Bukit Panjang up Clementi Road and I was home in time to complain before midnight, so no surcharge for after midnight and it wasn't an eve of anything.
Don't let them know you are new here, as they always ask in the hope you won't realise you are headed north instead of east!
Hey ho...

Central Business District (CBD) Surcharge at Paradiz Centre?

Post by janepoon » Thu, 16 Jun 2011 10:37 am

Is Paradiz Centre under CBD area?

Date: 15/06/11
Time from: 22:40 to 23:00
Travelling from: Paradiz Centre to Bt Panjang thru PIE.
Fare: $11.20

There is additional charge of CBD $3 is add in when request receipt.
Board the taxi - there is no $3 extra charges at all.
Issue of receipt need $3? Or There is really surcharge of CBD area?

Total fare: $14.20

My friends board another cab before and after me, they do not have any CBD charges. This is why I felt its getting weird. It's not a big sum $3. But.. why such charges added when receipt is given? I would like to find out where is CBD area surcharge apply? Why some charge and some don't?

Went thru the website, it only state the CBD taxi stands location.

It is not the 1st time i've been charge this CBD $3 charges. Board at Marina Sq /Esplanade - all have CBD charges. But, Paradiz Centre also have this CBD charges? Some map shows it doesn't classify as CBD area.

This CBD charges realliy covers everywhere? Is there any Map hi-light the roads/area that this CBD area applies?

Confused....

You might want to check out this thread which isn't just about "nightmares" but rather general taxi-related issues:

http://forum.singaporeexpats.com/ftopic ... sc-90.html

A post from there:
taxiguy wrote:CBD Surcharge bountries starts from Beach Road, North Bridge Road (Bugis junction), Bencoolen street, Orchard Road ( Marriott hotel Onwards), Suntec, Marina Bays Sands, Shenton way, Anson Road, Tanjong Pagar Road and Chinatown.

Big and Small Hotels alike with CBD surcharge includes:-
Mandarin Mandarin, Pan Pacific Singapore, Conrad, Mandarin Oriental, Ritz Carton, Fullerton Bay Hotel, Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Fullerton Hotel, Furama City Center, The Saff, Swissotel Stamford, Fairmount, Penisular and Excelsior hotel, Rendervous hotel, Carlton, Raffles Hotel, Mandarin Orchard, Holiday Inn @ City Centre, Concord Hotel, Grand Central Hotel, Grand Plaza hotel and many more.

CBD Surcharge starts from 5pm to 11.59pm, from Monday to Saturday. Its works also the same as the ERP collection when you enter CBD Area but only starts at 5pm.

I understand your frustrations. Sometimes I think it's better to walk the short distance during the peak hour.
