I noticed most hostels require you to check out at certain time. I wonder if there is any hostel where I could stay for 1 to 2 wk without checking in and out everyday. Any idea?

Hello Stranger! The price you will pay in a hostel, will be very close to that of the cheaper hotels, or maybe cheaper in the hotel. There are some relatively cheap hotels from 39$ a night though you have to search them out, the topic is covered on cheap accommodation.

Hostels on the other hand check out by a certain time each day normally, unless you can arrange a deal with the hostel management.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Check-out time is only applicable if that is your last day. Some hostels do close their doors during day-time hours, but its not all of them.

KSL - be great if you could give me a heads-up on where to find the hotels that you quote as everyone I've investigated is from S$70++

I posted the links on the forum a few months ago, I'll try to find them.

In the meantime you can see if this is still available http://forum.singaporeexpats.com/sutra91313.html

A quick glance on this one showed 50$ a night Geylang area, though there are some cheap ones in China Town too

http://www.asiarooms.com/en/singapore/index.html

Though an advertisement in the local paper will produce cheap accommodation, though never ever pay upfront, pay on a daily basis after you have slept there, never hand over your passport or other ID. There are many in Singapore, that will rent a room out in a condo for a quick buck$ money is money and everyone wants it, you just have to be wise and cautious when dealing, not to have many valuables on you or in the room.

Many locals will let you stay though it maybe a grey area, so they would say you are just friends staying for a while, because many don't get the permission to rent, they just need money, hence no valuable items around, which may tempt them.

It could also be in the forums interest to look into cheaper overnight accomadation, has sponsor advertising! It could attract many while searching for homes and appartments in Singapore and an added service for there realtor biz.
