Dual Citizenship(US/SG) problem and need to study in the US

Hello,
I(My friend) is facing some problem with trying to study in the US(Which will also be affecting me as well.. It's complicated so.. ya I am here to ask for help).
She is a holder of Singapore/US Dual Citizenship. And is turning 21 this year.
Now is where the problem is..
School start in US during September, and it is impossible to renounce citizenship and get Student Visa within such a short time.
There could be this possibility of coming back next year summer(4month) and try to renounce the citizenship then. But she told me that the process may take more than 4 months, and furthermore still need to apply for student visa which may take even more time after that. If not, by then, she would have already overshot age 22..
Is there anyway to request extension of declaring of citizenship since this is study matter? Or is there no choice but to waste 1 year while waiting for this process to happen?
Would be extremely thankful for helps on this!

Not really, if she is born overseas and is holding dual citizenship i.e US and SG and if she does NOT TAKE AN OATH OF ALLEGIANCE TO SG by the time she turns 22, her SG citizenship will be automatically rescind and she will be no longer be a SG Citizen.
All she needs to do is surrender her SG PP , IC at Singapore Mission in the US. Call ICA at www.ica.gov.sg. e-mail to Citizen Advise Bureau. They will send the renounce paper to you as a formalities even after she turns 22.

Incorrect on the time factor
Renunciation process from the time the application is received takes about 6 weeks. The next question is collecting your CPF if there is any from CPF board after the renunciation has been acknowledge by snail mail

Go ahead and get your student visa, then renounce. This is not a major
Would be extremely thankful for helps on this!

Hi Mad Scientist thank you for your help..
But uhm I probably didn't make it clear enough..
But I meant it totally opposite from what you mentioned..
It's renouncing US citizenship and going to study in US while keeping Singapore Citizenship...
..
Haha, would appreciate still if anyhelp can be given!
It's the first time I am posting.. Actually am I posting in the right section? Or should this be posted in strictly speaking..

Ahhh, my bad, I totally misread it .
Yes , this is the right section.
Ok , here we go.
1. Go to CAB get all the info. You can pledge your allegiance between 21 to 22. Not after 22.
2. Inform CAB of your predicament. Look for the assistant registrar of CAB not the front line. She will advise you . You MUST REGISTER WITH CAB and get those allegiance of oath docs.
3. Meantime you have to read this link
http://travel.state.gov/law/citizenship ... p_776.html
4. Once you register yourself with CAB, you can pledge your allegiance to SG even at Singapore Mission Overseas.
5. You have to get the letter from CAB stating this.
6. Once you read the link and clear all issue with CAB , then go to US Embassy and renounce
7. Remember there are implication on renouncing US Citizenship same goes to SG Citizenship.
8. Please think and consider your future options as it might bite you back in later life. There are both advantages and disadvantages at both ends.
Only you can make that choice
Does this help ?

Thank you so much MS.
But it doesn't seem to solve the problem that she need to go to the US this fall for studies.. and is unable to go there because..
1) Her US passport will be held by the embassy while trying to renounce US citizenship.
2) She will be unable to apply for the student Visa because she is still a citizen at the US. And is only able to apply after she has finished the renunciation process(Can verify?)
3) Also once again, considered asking her to return next year summer 4month break to renounce citizenship, but was told that the US renunciation period may take more than 4 months. Which will totally break it again..
But, I will definitely ask her to try this out.. Not sure if she has looked at this..
Thank you so much for your advice!
In the meantime definitely open for more ideas/ways for this to work
.

I am not able to help you on the US side of things. Perhaps SMS or others know this.
What I do know is ICA is very proactive if you wish to keep your SG Citizenship. SO have a talk with CAB first then go from there.
On a side note, why can't you just go to the Uni as a US citizen rather than on a student visa ?

Haha, because she is turning 22 by next year and need to renounce US citizenship, but at the same time we are studying in the US.. So by next year she must renounce her US citizenship if not lose her SG citizenship.. So therefore must get student visa after that.
Been thinking there must have been people who study in the US.. and kena this before..

Exactly my point, on the earlier post, please read and understand properly.
You can delay your SG pledge of allegiance hence you will NOT lose SG citizenship. As I said b4, go to Citizen Advise Bureau and explain to them your predicament and they will give you a letter to assure that you will NOT lose your SG citizenship hence this will allow you more to time to renounce US citizenship
You make it such a major issue which is NOT if you understand what I have been trying to convey to you all this while
I really do not how to put it across to you anymore. If someone else has a better way of explaining to this OP , please help

oh.. I didn't understood that point!
yea trying to do this now already.. But the first email reply was that this is not possible..
I think these kinda stuff case by case.. because it's really rush by Sept this year.. And worry that doesn't go through.. That's why I am asking experts here is there any other way haha..
Thank you so much!
I'll probably try and ask her if she can sign anything to confirm her oath to SG de before going then.
