US Tax Accountant looking for work in sg, need advice please

Post by jasonwdp10 » Mon, 07 Jun 2010 3:06 am

Hi everyone!

I'm currently working in US taxes and studying for the CPA (US) exam. I would like to eventually work in Singapore (currently in my early 20's). I have a bachelor of science in accounting and am currently in the process of studying for the CPA (US) exam.

Would it be unrealistic to find a job in Singapore for someone like me? Are there any further qualifications I would need to have a better chance to find a job over there? If it helps, in addition to English, I speak fluent Cantonese and basic Mandarin, though I cannot really read or write Chinese. Thank You!!

~Jason

With your language experience you will probably have a (far) better chance in Hong Kong as there are not many cantonese speaking US tax accountants there. In Singapore the ligua franca is english - so your advantage is minimised here.
Things to do:
1) Contact the accounting firms and law firms that offer tax consulting and ask them if they're looking.
2) Get as much experience as you can with working with multiple tax riegmes as that will also make you attractive.

You ought to start a business representing American expats in Singapore. Not near enough tax authorities to handle US tax issues... everything from earned income exclusion to foreign corporation reporting.

Hi, are you currently working in US? I think there's a demand here especially in the big four firms. I am working in corporate taxation in one of the big four firms.

I am keen to know what are the chances of finding a position in US for a tax person like myself, especially in the area of merger and acquisition?

Should I be taking up further qualifications to enhance my chances to get a position in US?
