Hi, I have to agree with Adel abt the short-term career in SQ as a cabin crew. I graduated from STC many years back, but tendered my resignation without even going to my 1st solo flight. Reason being, i was too intimidated by my SNY flights...the team was unfriendly, the LSS actually wanted my buddy and me to introduce ourselves to each and every team member and remember their names! Once crew even scolded me coz I dun remember her name... I would advise those who is keen to fly, to have some working experience b4 embarking on a flying career. That is to prepare u for the "zapping" or politics in SQ. I was too "green" as that was my 1st job...duno how to handle the situations...

Looking back, i did regret somehow...but even if i am still in SQ, i would only fly for a few years and resign. I feel that it is not a long-term career for women, especially if u wana settle down and have kids. My sis had to resign when she was pregnant...obviously there is no ground jobs for pregnant crew! After giving birth she resume flying as a flying mother (after 2 mths of training)..But ask yourselves gals: How many times are you going to resign when pregnant and go back flying?? You won't have any income during the 1 year (being pregnant and confinement), whereas working in a ground job entitles u to maternity benefits. You kids will need your attention and care when they grow up too; surely u'll wana be there for them whenever they need u..?Trust me, husbands would prefer their wives to hold a ground job once they're married. My sis is currently searching for one now, for the benefit of their kid. They can't afford to have both husband and wife flying and not being around with their kid most of the time. My bf is a tech crew with SQ; some of his colleagues have gfs who are crew...and the ironical thing is, these gals actually are tired of flying and wana resign after married! I suppose flying become more of a mundane task after many many years...u've been to almost all the countries in the world countless times, whats new? The rest period overseas are not as "attractive" as before, abt 1-2days...how far can u travel to sightsee then?

As for the men who are eager to be flight stewards... well, ask urself if u are willing to work in the galley most of the time, heating meals, serving drinks...Prospects for males are not as great, as their promotions are much slower. My batch boys are still FS after 7 years of flying!

As for those eager to try out JAL, they're stricter than SQ in training. No coloured hair, must always be in office attire (with jackets) and covered shoes. Must bow to instructors whenever u see them. Can't wear perfume at work (as some pax dun like scents)..blah blah... Training will be abt 2 mths in Singapore, and 2 mths in Tokyo (aircraft training). Have to wake up very early everyday to travel to training centre. There is no bond when u train in Singapore, but once in Tokyo, there'll be a bond of 6mths (during my time). If u break the bond, will have to pay $2000. A few of my batch gals broke their bond after 2 mths of flying.

Lastly, being a cabin crew may look glamourous on the outside, but it's not as easy a job as you gals think. Tough pushing the meal carts, getting backache, attending to demanding passengers and the politics. Of course, some crew are really nice, and one get to travel places and experience many cultures. Most cabin crew who stayed on because they've been in this line for many years...the entry level at those times were 'N' and 'O' Levels. If they were to come out of SQ, what kind of jobs can they do? Are they willing to take up jobs with a mere salary of $1500? I doubt so..if i were them, i'd stay on too. It's a quote from my brother-in-law who is a "victim" in this aspect.

So people, do make full use of your degrees/ diplomas in other aspects ya? Build up a career thats long-lasting... flying is just a phrase of one's life. Gain the experience and move on.....

Good luck to u all.... :D[/quote]

Wintery, can I get your email...I have a lot of questions to ask. PM me . Thanks.

Hi ppl,

I have one question here.

Understand that during the water confidence test and kebaya round, there will be a lancome beautian and a trainer present.

Does the beautician only input comments or can she fail an interviewee too??

hey hey!!

Was just browsing and suddenly came across this forum. This forum is really interesting and helpful. =) by the way, i have a few enquries on how to be a flight attendant, hopefully someone kind will answer my questions.

1. i'm graduating end of this year, so when will be the most appropriate time to apply for position in cabin crew? how long does the application-interview-training process take?

2. Is posture a main criteria SIA is looking for? because i hunch a lil'.

3. is there a requirement that stewardess must have a good eye sight? i wear contact lenses, and am quite short sighted,,say bout 600 per eye?will it pose a problem?

Lastly, was just wondering, if i'm so lucky to be chosen to be an air hostess with SIA, is accomodation in Singapore provided? this is bcz i stay in KL..

thanks.

Posture is very important for SIA. because really never seen any SIA crew slouch or hunch.

Wearing contact lens is okay. There are many crews that wear glasses when they are not in uniform.

12 am,
A good post, I think the 'zapping' has been stamped on of late. I did read something on it but don't remember where. However, as you say it is only a short-term career for women.

Sheryl wrote:Plavt, TeaHouse, biscotti_girl, zoergal, serembanboy, thanks for the heartwarming replies and useful tips. Really appreciate the help from you guys/gals. After a few days, i thought of many things, hope you could spare some time for them below. Thanks!!

Although we're given time to prepare for the kebaya, do we need to bring the ladies' equipment (hair dryer, mirror, etc) cos i believe dozens of us will be eye balling these things if we share a common equipment. Need to put light makeup for the water confidence test?

How do we know that the kebaya fits our bodyshape? Will there be explanation on how to wear the uniform properly? What if we couldn't find a suitable one?

How about the shoe? Will it be provided there?

Lastly, what is SIA looking for during the kebaya walking with the tray?

oceanmist, at least you got to share the joy and excitement with your friends on spot. Those i knew in round 1 got booted, so now kinda of alone. Maybe i'll join you and your group to hunt for the swim suit if the time is okay cos i attending some eye seminar at singapore national eye center on sat afternoon. Anyway i will pm you my number :D In the mean time, i'll try to practise swimming with contacts lenses on. And by the way, all the girls there are slim and busty, less me.

Also my tests are on tuesday, maybe we could go together?

Cheesie, congrats!! All the best to you, we'll be waiting for your good news!!
Dear Sheryl,

Do not need to bring any hair dryer or mirror. You would be taking your shower in the bathroom and there would be mirror in there. Although there would be plently of interviewees then, you can share the hair dryer. During my time, the fellow interviewees were really very nice. My number was one of the last few and thus we are running out of time. But we stayed and helped each other with the bunning of hair, lending mascaras to one another and etc. Hence, I should said, there would not be a problem at all.

As for the Kebaya fitting, there are no sizes. You are allowed to take in as many pieces as possible to try in the changing room. Like I said, my batch girls were really nice. We inter-swopped the uniforms within one another. Also, we would give advices to each other when we felt that the uniform is not fitting. Please remember that the uniform must be fitting. When I said fitting here, it means not too tight nor too lose. You do not looked weird wearing it. Got it? As long as you feel comfortable and the size is just right, stay put then. The other time, I got to tried a few before getting the perfect fit. So do not worry alrightz! Of course, do not take more than 10 minute trying as the interviewers are waiting for you. Usually, you will be asked to get ready in a group of 10s. After putting on the uniform, you are required to line up and wait outside the interviewer's room. They will ring the bell and the light will lit up to indicate that they are ready for you. Yes, Sandals will be provided. They come in size 4 - 8 or 9. Also, there would only be limited pairs of sandals. If someone took your size and she's infront of you, you may remind her courteously that you need her sandal for your turn later. Do not get an under or over size as you would be required to walk in the room.

Honestly, the interviewers (who consist of SIA staff and a beautician) are looking at the way you look in the Kebaya, the way you walk, smile and carry yourself. They would be looking at your complexion too. So, if its a 'Zit' day for you, please conceal it. Do not take any chances. You need to knock on the door, greet them and close the door gently. I understand its a little too much for all of us but you need to maintain a demure image. When they are done with the inspections, please acknowledge with a 'Thank You' and leave the room gracefully. Sometime, they will post questions to you. Just answer it normally.

Hm.. having said sooo much, Good luck to you and Oceanmist and to those who are going for your round 3 next week!! I have a friend who is going for her round 3 next week too! You can PM me should you have any more 'private' questions.. cheers =)

Hi Matt10, Shreked, Plavt & Chai Ching,

I wish to say thanks to you all for your nice comments, but it should be dedicated to Wintery and Adel, as they the one who wrote them. I just re-post them as i feel it is good information. I too, like many others out there, have a lot of doubts in my head as well.

I too, dream of becoming a FA since high school, but my friend, a SIA pilot, stop me for the similar story he told me and some unmentioned stories. He ask me to think about that when I am more mature. So I went to study university.

Like Emy01 in her post at http://www.singaporeexpats.com/forum/ft ... c-795.html , I made the decision of going on with postgraduate studies and now in a research job. Research is extremely hard job, it's a 24/7 job - because you are paid to think and research what does not seem to exist yet. It challenges your every single day. But the experinces gained can make you a stronger person. After all, research is a skills and knowledge of that area that you accumulate.

I wanted to enjoy life while I still young, and build my career after 30+. I don't see research as my long term career, I don't find it suit me. But with the experinces I'm gaining now, I believe I can do many other things. I wanted to try some other things after my this job. The dream of being FA still there. My opinion to share with many uni graduates, there is no wrong choice of what you choose to do, it's a matter what you think is important to you to make your life happy at that time. Although I won't make FA my long term career, I believe it's a hard work too, but also believe being a FA can add more, good or bad, into my life. I am still considering it, I need to do more research in this issue, so I can make a wise desicion later to be or not to be. I don't know that many FA, so I really wanted to know more about FA life. So hopefuly any current FA can share their good or bad experinces to us :")

So worried......

Hey,

I went for the april recruitment at suntec and they told me, like the rest of the guys, to wait two weeks for mail..but its not here! =(( Is it email or snail mail? I keep getting paranoid about lost mail..or maybe someone there was using my form to catch the icing sugar off his frosted donut and left a coffee mug stain on it, then decided to throw it away.. wahh..

Any chance I might have missed my date for the 2nd round already? What to do..what to do..?

hi twelve am,

i agree with wat u wrote...cabin crew is not a long term job, depending on individua....i think this job can really help us to b more confident, charisma and building people's skills. besides this job also gives us the chance to improve on our knowledge in safety, food and beverage, country, cultures, etc. so it is not just "coffee, tea or juice?'

I am planning to join also for my self development and tried my first time at suntec but was booted out at the first stage. anyway, hopefully, there wil b a recruitment in KL soon for stewards (but today's paper dun have, )

for oceanmist, sheryl,
how is the preparation for ur third stage? practice on ur walking and the important skills to impress the interviewers? watever you girls, do with confident, poise, elegant and the smile, k. :D i have confidence in u all.

Hey whuiskas,
As far as I know, they are already clearing the guys who went for the Suntec walk-in interview. Most of the guys have completed the water confidence test and some are already waiting for the final round of interview. You might want to give the Cabin Crew Division a call to re-affirm. You might have been left out.

thanks sq_boy~~

Oh no!! T_T

That's the thing..for the last week I have been wanting to call them, but I don;t have any numbers and I have no idea how to search for one. I'm so kicking myself for not getting the numbers of any of the other guys in my group who got through too...

Any suggestions? Soonest I can call is monday right?
