GP / Family Doctor Recommendation

Post by londontosingapore » Mon, 31 May 2010 7:29 pm

Hello all,

As the subject suggest, we are looking for a good GP / Family Doctor - we were lucky to have a very good GP in the UK that truly focussed on what was best for us (ie had no incentive to push any meds but at the same time made sure we received whatever treatment we needed)....

...and it would be nice to find a family doctor with a similar philosophy in Singapore.

We've already had experience of 2 doctors here...our experience has been average to be polite about it: one guy had no bedside manner and wasn't willing to discuss his recommendation...the other guy prescribed strong antibiotics that are probably inappropriate for my condition.

So, I am calling on you folk to please help us before we end up sampling every single GP in Singapore....

Thanks in advance,

M.

Hello londontosingapore,
My husband and I just found out our Singapore assignment is becoming long term and are looking for a good GP as well. If you happen across one let me know please :)
Thanks!

Hi Londontosingapore,

My job exposes me to a lot of doctors in singapore, mostly specialists and some GPs and your are right that not all doctors are ethical. I can't say who are the bad ones in the forum but you can try some of the good ones I've encountered. For GPs, Dr. Koo SL from Newcastle clinic in Liat Towers is quite good in my opinion. He also has quite a number of tie ups with insurance companies and his patients always seem happy after coming out of his consult room. You may wanna look him up to see his fees.

I'll be able to help more if you are looking for specialists....

Disappointed with Newcastle Clinic

Post by insgsince2004 » Sun, 21 Nov 2010 4:38 pm

In the interest of people who may have the same query about finding good GPs / Family Doctors in Singapore and come across this forum as I did, I would like to say that I had a disappointing experience at Newcastle Clinic. I came across this thread and on the basis of Medi_Assist's recommendation above, decided to see the doctor at Newcastle Clinic for a week long bout of cold, cough and newly acquired laryngitis. It also helped that the clinic belongs to the panel of GP clinics affiliated with our health insurance. The only thing the doctor did after asking me what I was suffering from was to check my chest (not as thorough as my previous GPs) and prescribe 7 different medications, all of which were dispensed from his clinic and billed accordingly. Even when I told him that my throat was not painful nor sore in any way, he went ahead and prescribed throat lozenges, which I found weird considering he never checked my throat either. He never asked me if I suspected I was pregnant or could be pregnant to guide his choice of medication. Nor was there any question posed about the date of my last menstrual period. He never explained the choice of medications prescribed and what each was for. He also suggested that I come back after recovery for a flu shot. I've lived in Singapore since 2004 and obviously I'm still waiting to find a good family doctor. But I felt compelled to write this and let people know what my experience was like at this clinic.

After trying for a few GPs , we stick on to the Family clinic @ Rivervale Mall & The kids Clinic which is just next to it for my kids.

Feel happy they are not those 5 mins doctors (Like go in ,ask abt then chase you out to get medicine), they will really ask u alot of questions and answer to your questions till you satisfy. Fees are quite reasonable also.

Being in the Medical Profession,
I strongly recommend Dr Quek Koh Choon from Bedok Life Clinic in Bedok North.

He has almost 40 years experience as a Family Doctor.

A Good GP/Family Physician does not usually advertise their services. They may just have their own web site and that's about it.
Patients get to know these doctors by word of mouth. So please ask around.
These doctors should have many years of experience.
It is usually run by a single doctor with no tie up with any insurance companies. So when you consult them you pay the bill first and then get reimbursement from your insurance companies with your receipt after.
You may find 1 or 2 in Orchard & Tanglin area.

Interesting. Two posts. Both identical in actual content. one current but I fail to understand what the purpose of dredging up a thread that is 7 years old to repeat. You had to hunt for that thread in order to flog whatever message you are trying to subliminally advertise. I know I won't be seeing any more of those posts, will I.....
