Work Pass for spouses

Post by djfiii » Wed, 26 May 2010 12:29 am

Hello - first time poster here.

My wife has an opportunity with her company that would result in a 18-24 month stay in Singapore. We are both Americans, both have undergraduate and masters degrees from top 10 universities in the US, currently live in the US, and both have very transferable skill sets. My background is Accounting, IT Audit and Information Security (to the extent that they all blend a little bit in a large corporate environment). I have about 10 years of experience.

My question is, do I need to find a job before I arrive? Do I even have the option of finding a job after I get there, i.e. can I get a permit to apply for jobs without having a company sponsor me? Clearly my wife's company will sponsor her to work, but I would need to find a job while I'm there, and not sure how I would need to go about doing that.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks!

You can apply and will get a Dependants Pass which is tied to your wife's EP. This allows you reside in Singapore and look for a position. Most companies don't realise that a person is actually permitted to work on a DP. All that's needed is for the company to file a Letter of Consent form with the MOM.

However you might want the company to apply for an EP for you as this isn't tied to your wife's EP. If your wife loses her job, you automatically lose your DP and therefore your job.

Yeah! Singapore is much better in that regard in comparison to your own country. Just come on a dependants pass and then look for a job. Your new employer will either apply for an EP/WP for you or apply for a Letter of Consent so that you can work using your dependants pass.

caveat emptor: some companies don't know that they can hire someone on a dependent's pass.
