Rent in Singapore

Post by clivefrancis » Thu, 13 May 2010 1:40 am

hi,

my first post on here so be gentle!

i am currently in negotiations over a package for a job and i have been asked what i would like in terms of package on top of the base salary.

i have looked online to get an idea of housing costs but information is either years out of date or prices are on application.

i am not sure on the location as i don't know where the office is, but it will need to be in an area where there are schools as i have a 7 yr old.

what would i expect to pay for a 3 bed house with a garden per month?

do the condos allow pets - we have a 2 yr old cockerspaniel

all help will be greatly appreciated

thanks

The rental cost on a 3 bed landed property can be as low as $3K all the way up to $20k plus. It all depends on the area and condition of the property. You really need to try and narrow down the area taking in to account the school and where your office is. condos do allow dogs but the Landlord might not.

ok thanks, but at the moment i just need a ball park figure for an average 3 bed with garden not an executive pad, i.e. $5k, $7k, $10k etc. so that i can go back to my potential employer.

what i don't want to do is say a figure and then find out i under sold myself by $3k a month!

There are schools all over the country so that doesn't narrow things down. Allot of the 'expat international (and expensive) schools seem to be on the west or city area.

:)

Siglap area (on the east coast) has some really nice landed houses but not sure how much they are. If you've got kids, a cluster house would be better as they tend to come with a pool - in this heat it's a god send.

ok thanks for that, i have now found out where the office is Changi Business Park Central 1, so ideally not too far away from that and not on the flight path.

do cluster houses have their own garden (we have a cocker spaniel)?

what would a typical 3 bed landed house cost, what would a 3 bed cluster (with pool) cost?

cheers

I'm not the best resource as I'm only just moving to Sg next week, but we have spent a lot of time trying to find a place to live / prices. First, many condos do allow pets. I wouldn't rule it out. Houses with gardens are going to be tougher to find than condos. Also depends on if you will have a car (how close to MRT do you need to be) I would say that you should plan for at least 7,000 per month. If you find something cheaper - then great, but many many places will be much much higher than that.

I'll be interested to see what other people think.
