Let me know if you find anywhere cheap as I'm also interested in getting one.

50 Aussie bucks is well cheap. What's the catch there?
And what's the difference between 1st gen, Xbox arcade, etc...?

Be advised, there's an Xbox and there's an Xbox360. I'm pretty sure your son plays the latest games on the Xbox360. Not the old Xbox.
The Xbox360 comes in several variations. Main difference will be the hard disk that comes with it. Google will be more specific than I can.

No catch. Retailers accept trade in's of old xbox model when people upgrade to xbox 360.
These old boxes, they clean up, refurbish if needed, and resell for $50.
Most kids want xbox 360 though (out of the two)

Look for a second hand 360 Elite set ( black). It comes with a wifi head set that allows "chat" during the games and would be just the job to keep in touch with your son ( presuming he has the head set too of course)
It also has a hard disk as standard to store your profile games etc.
I wouldn;t recommend the 360 wifi add on thou as the connection speed can be patchy. GO for a "power line" ethernet connection from your PC/ router to your xbox . Unless of course your router/ internet connection is right next to your xbox.
You'll also need a subscription to xbox live . Quite a few variants here

Good luck

When someone mentions the xbox they mean the xbox 360 of course, though by all means watch out if you see a price tag like $50... then it's definitely the old product being mentioned.

Not sure about where to get cheap consoles but it is worth shopping around when it comes to buying games. I asked for the price of a game in one ship in parkways parade and they told me $80, went to a shop that was 3 stores along and the same game was $70.
