American on a Work Holiday Pass

Post by courtneylind » Wed, 05 May 2010 5:36 am

Hello!
I'm an american university student and I'm in the process of getting a Work Holiday Program pass. However, I want to secure some sort of job before I arrive in Singapore, because I will only be there from mid-June to mid-September (I will be with my dad because he has a job there), and I don't want to spend all my time looking for one.
Is anyone familiar with the WHP and know if businesses, companies, etc. will hire people with a WHP just for the summer months? I have been told that my chances aren't great, but I can't go an entire summer without working, and I'm really hoping to find somewhere that will hire me.
If anyone has any information or previous experience with this, or knows of specific places that are looking for summer-months employees, I would GREATLY appreciate it!
Thank you so much!!

What about your dad's company? If not, he must have some other contacts there that you can network with in other companies, no?

I see dozens of them at the restaurants/clubs along Boat/Clark/Robertson Quays. Check with the clubs down there.

Question: What type of job do you want?
Is it one in your field of study or will any do (bar service, nannying etc?)

If it is the former then identify which companies in SG would fit and send them letters asking them if they would be willing to employ you for the duration (I'm assuming that this process is very similar in the US) Utilise your Dad's network of friends as SG is a small place.

If the latter you can just walk in and apply to any number of jobs here. They all have walk-in interviews during the day. Shop assistants and bar staff and coffee shop staff.

If you're interested in nannying / babysitting on a part time basis there is work around - hopefully some other peeps can give you a heads up on how to hook into that one.

Its a great place to spend the summer and I hope you enjoy your trip.
