There are people mover for 8 which will be massive and comfortable.
Toyota Estima or Previa. Honda Odyssey is a 7 seater but not sure about leg room especially for European.
Volvo XC90 is good but not sure based on your budget
Hyundai Trajet or KIA Carnival I think will meet your budget
This will suit your purpose. Not sure if you are talking pound or SG dollar
If the former yeah if the latter maybe.
Shop around on the Straits Times Ad
I drive a Disco 3 LR Diesel here, 7 seater, lots of leg room, 3 ton but in SG will cost you an arm and a leg

despagnac wrote:Hi Mad Scientist, thank you so much for the reply, I will look into detail with all the make and models you have mentioned. by the way my budget was in Singapore dollars. we just can't not justify paying so much money for a car. can not get our head aound it when you can by the same car for half the price in the UK. But I guess if you need it, there's nothingelse you can do about it but to buy one. How practical is it to go without a car in singapore with 2 young children? do you think we can survive?
Yeah cost of car in SG is ludicrous. It depends where you are living. Most places have MRT line , bus is quite punctual, you really do not need one.
The public transport is really good
IMHO just to maintain is already substantial, let alone drive one where it is just an island, if you can do without it will be best
Yeah my DISCO 3 cost about half a mil in SG but again I am not living there anymore :)

Hey D

Just a reminder Kia Karnival is a sucker on fuel. Years ago neighbour had one and the fuel line cable tends to give way and need replacement

We have a Toyota Fortuner but just be aware you pay more tax for a bigger car and the petrol situation is another issue.

Hi,

Just to let you know, we just lost a lot of money on our kia, which we bought when first got here. We have two kids and another on the way, occasionally carpool, etc., so needed a 7 seater. We lost about 40% on the kia, partly because we sold it too early, but they tend not to hold their value either. I've had two other kia's in the States, and had no major complaints, but I found myself in the same crappy situation when it was time to sell/trade it.

We settled on a Toyota picnic here. It was the most compact, maneuverable, easy-to-park 7 seater we looked at, and two months later, we love it.

Good luck!

Has anyone tried the bigger cars such as Toyoto Vellfire or Alphard? What are they like in terms of petrol consumption, maneuverability etc. I would expect to pay more for petrol but not a ridiculous amount. Also will I struggle to get into most carparks at the shopping malls?

We're a family of five with regular visiting relatives so a larger vehicle is a must.

Thanks in advance (and sorry for hijacking thread)...

Funny you should mention Alphard, we had ours for three years and its perfect. It was an 8 seater but we removed a seat for a large fridge. There are some older malls and the American club where it cant fit. It came with a list of all the places it cant go in, but the size comfort and reliability more than makes up for the few places you cant drive into.

Now that we are used to it every where we go HK, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand we always insist on the hotel Alphard to collect us.

We are getting a new one at the end of the month, so if the OP want to discuss taking our current one, 3 years old, one nun owner etc. drop me a line (I know this is thin ice as far as advertising goes).
