The thing about living near the MRT station is crowd.
If you're happy to be sandwiched in the MRT every morning and evening, by all means.
Else, check out places that gives you a good bus route to your work place. There are two major public bus service providers in Singapore, charging $1-$2 each way. However, if you live along Marine Parade (and a few other neighborhoods too I've heard), there is Busplus and perhaps other private bus services to Raffles too. They charge about $4 each way.
The thing about buses, the further out your home is from the city, the better chance you get a seat on a bus. This can be precious further down your stay.
Else, there is the taxi. By all means learn how to book a taxi via sms.

I've always preferred east coast over hv. Perhaps the atmophere and with joo chiat near by makes the play a bit more down to earth.

i visited east coast - marine parade / siglap area - a couple weeks back and loved it there for its close proximity to the beach. i would definitely move there if it's closer to MRT since i'm not a fan of the bus. i took the bus from orchard there at 6pm and it was very crowded and lots of traffic jam.

The buses do get very busy, especially the fast one from Orchard (36). You could live somewhere like Telok Kurau and be within walking distance of both the east coast park and the MRT.

Excellent thanks guys I will get looking into those.
By any chance do any of you know what the
property market is like at the moment around the East Coast? e.g. how much can you negotiate off advertised prices?
Thanks! K

You can actually go to ., to check out the prices. There's information there about how many units for any
condo that are up for rental at the moment. So if you spent some time on the site, you'll roughly know how's the rental mkt like for any area.
For myself, I paid the asking price but requested them to change the aircons, & add additional furniture which they did.

We live on Bayshore Road on the East Coast and my husband used to get the Bus Plus service that picks up from our road then a couple of other stops along the way into the CBD. It's $5 each way so cheap as chips.
He now taxi pools with a couple of other people so no longer gets the bus. We have a shuttle bus on site which also takes you to the MRT station, I used to use this allot until I had my baby so now pay $4 to get a cab to the MRT station.
When we were still in the UK still researching where to live, we also looked at the West and Central areas but you tend to get less bang for your buck as far as apartments are concerned - bigger rents but smaller space. We were put off as well by the comments in the 'guide book' about links to public transport, but having lived here 18 months, we've never found it a problem. Unless of course it's raining.........

Ah yes I was going to ask about the premium service bus from the East Coast. Think this is a great idea as online it says you can be in the CBD in 20 mins. Does anyone take this? Does it get really busy - eg do you need to book a seat on a set time?
Think we're definately set on East Coast now. And thanks to all you're comments you'll have another Brit and a Finn in Siglap! Looking at
condo's such as Laguna Green and Mandarin gardens which seem to be within budget for a decent sized two bed.
Life in a box is better than no life at all... I expect.

The bus plus etc do seem to get busy but if you live up the Siglap end you'd probably be OK - I'm not sure what happens after that when all the seats are taken, I heard that it is no standing (unlike on public buses) so if you live further up Marine Parade Rd (towards the city) you might have to get the normal buses.
There's a 196e which goes to the CBD but with e meaning 'express' I'm not sure where the express bit starts as it seems to stop at the same bus stops as the normal 196 does - perhaps it goes on the expressway after Tanjong Katong Rd.

In fact, I don't see much social distancing everywhere I go.
