Few months back, me and my bf moved to Singapore, i quit my job and he ob had a new job here. I have been trying to find something and it looks like impossible, as we arnt married, im here just with visitors pass, i can stay 90 days, then jump out for week to malaiysia or indonesia, somewhere close by and then come back. I feel like i'm stuck, dunno where to go or what to do, dont know anyone apart from my bf and then, damn i had to come here....

All the sudden i ve been browsing this site for hours, diff topics etc, trying to figure out , what kind of ppl are in here, is this the place for singaporeans and pr only too...it says expat tho :) THEN i see this, someone actually managed to find a job, i do not know the whole story but, im glad.... maybe just maybe i can find smthing too...

Thanks for your post, keeps my spirit alive :)

People who write in such places are either regulars or these in need. If they are not in need any longer they do not write (typically). So surely there are more successful stories but better not get too optimistic. Adding to what was already said here, another way to get a job is via voluntary work. You will have much better insight to the job market and know the right ppl and job opportunities if you are already inside. My wife (still gf at that time) got her foot in this way while being on LTSVP.
Of course this also depends on your background and should be easier if you are more into social than technical type of professions.
If I remember correctly you do not need the work permit to work as a volunteer but please check this out with MOM.

My wife who followed me to Singapore as a spouse linked to my EP finally got a job here. Thought it might tell to reinforce some of the methods already described here. She looked on websites and recruitment firms and generally recruiters here at the worst I have seen, she used to get rung up for jobs well out of the criteria she gave to the recruiters (either
pay, location or role). Were hardly ever close so goes to show how amateur most are as they are just filling the company requirement not the job applicant and the aim seems to be show the company enough cv's they will eventually get lucky without really role profiling and matching people to roles. Anyway her best leads to date were through other expats mainly on specific projects here in Singapore. Finally she got a job role that sounded great come through the website which she applied directly to the company. She happened to be on holiday on OZ for two weeks and had here interview at the head office of an aussie contruction company operating over here in OZ and got the role. The feedback from them is that they had tried two locals in the role and they had failed miserably so they wanted expats. The role was advertised in OZ as well but she missed it. They said her adavantage was her MNC experience, no cost to the company to get her to Singapore for the role and realistic pay expectation.
She took about $50k off her expectation of what she would get in OZ for a similar role. So I guess keep all that in mind if your looking for a job and maybe look at job roles advertised in other countries for roles in Singapore as you will have a few advantages already being here.

Hi all,
I must say that this thread hits the spot for a lot of issues i am encountering these days.

here is a little of my experience:
Recruitment agencies, i had a few ridiculous phone conversations with agency personnel that made me think something is fundamentally wrong.
one of them even told me that they require minimum 4 years of experience with a software version that has only been available for 3 years. no use trying to explain, the guy just repeated the question "do you have more than 4 years....".
And generally i keep seeing funny "buzzwords" in recruitment adds which as a programmer i find quite funny.
But yesterday i had a meeting with a small "boutique" agency which was super duper wonderful and helpful.. even gave me tips on how to improve my resume and online portfolio, only thing is the job they have for me is looking to pay about half of what i earn right now.
There are some good agencies out there! but not many :)

As for pay, its really a matter of luck and a lot of searching.. like my friend told me: good paying jobs do exist and eventually you do the same work just get paid double (which is what he is doing now).
From my searching experience, local companies dont want to pay much in general, the market here is spoiled for locals.
And they can get workers for less.

a lot of keywords like "senior", "manage a team of x.." etc.. eventually turn out that the pay is the same like middle or below positions.. its quite frustrating and difficult to filter out the jobs this way.

As a foreigner you always have the advantage of having the link to your country.. thats one of the channels i am trying to promote as well as searching within Singapore adds. keep a look out for adds in your country, ask your friends/family try to get to know the expats here they are usually very helpful and hope for the best.

hope this helps, this thread helped me a lot when i first read it about 2.5 weeks ago.

You are right about the "pay" bit, although I would not recommend being too picky when you are job hunting (assuming you are without a job at the moment in SG). I think if the role seems interesting then one can compromise on the pay bit, if only to get one's foot in the door. Its always easier to look for another job when you're already employed. Goodluck!

In my personal case i am still earning some money from projects from overseas so its buying me time to search for something better.
although its getting less and less.. also looking for work takes up much from my working hours.
Its always easier to look for another job when you're already employed. Goodluck!
You are right! i guess that is what i will probably do eventually hope i dont get too comfortable :)
