Moving companies?

Post by jpatokal » Tue, 26 Oct 2004 11:40 pm

Time for me to ask something for a change: I need a bunch of cardboard boxes, a couple of muscled guys and a van for a move (within Singapore) soon-ish, as in this weekend or next. Recommended companies and ballpark estimates? Willing to pay premium for quality, primarily defined as getting my collection of Japanese ceramics from point X to point Y without too much damage along the way.

Movers in Singapore: Shalom movers, raffles Movers

Maybe you could call up the following to check on the schedules.

Shalom Transport: 62876117

Raffles Movers: 68943720,68943730

They do quite a bit of expat moving, so I would think they are professional.

:)

So I ended up with an outfit called Handpower Movers, which is basically a mom-and-pop company with a couple of Indian coolies for the grunt work (the guy driving the truck is the MD). I can't say I was terribly impressed with their business processes: their website's online quote thing is broken, they attempted to charge me a fair multiple of the real price for a move in Sing (which, I am informed, should be around S$100 for a truck from X to Y and a couple of guys to carry boxes) and they showed up a few hours llate on the day itself. On the plus side, they worked fast, did a decent job, didn't break anything and had no problems with getting their act together with two days notice.

No, I paid a bit more, but my Singaporeans friends tell me I should have paid $100. But it was about as simple as a moving job can get: fairly little stuff, packed & unpacked by myself, elevators and easy access both ways.
