Kids Ophthalmologist? Kids eye doctor anyone!

Post by boffenl » Mon, 29 Mar 2010 1:19 pm

Hi--

During a recent parent teacher conference my daughter's teacher mentioned she moved my daughter to the front of class since she occassionally can't read the board.

I need to take her for an eye exam but would prefer tot ake her to a trained ophthalmologist--not just some random eye glass store.

Any suggestions that won't break the bank?

asked the same question to my GP an few months ago

and he basically told me that in singapore ophthalmologist don't see children much... that I just had to take her to an eye glass store for the exam there...

:???:

in the end it's what I've done... she had more and more headaches... something needed to be done quickly... brought my daughter to an eye glass store... she is happy holder of a pair of glasses

except if the correction they need is a tricky one... some problems being harder to correct than others or if there is a problem with assessing really the eyesight ( some children can trick the computer... I could as a child... the doctor thought I had prefect eyesight, until he dilated my eyes... and then it was a whole other story... dilatation being the one thing that separates eye glass store of eye doctor for simple problems... )

then an eye glass store is enough...

Humm, thanks Merichan! How did you choose a store? Honestly my cheap side might win out or my daughter would choose one based on the glasses on display in the window!

I wonder if the eye glass store migth just give her glasses if she doesn't really need them? AUGH!!! How old was your kid? Mine is only 8--I feel so young to need glasses already. I was 12 when I got mine! :)

Sounds expensive! But eyes are important, so I shouldn't be cheap, just can't imagine eyes now and braces next year! I need a second job!

Appreciate any recommendations, thanks!

my daughter is 5 and a half... got her glasses when she was 5

her correction is still light... the optician told me ( in line with what I knew beforehand ) that given her needs... he was giving the glasses mainly because of her complaining of headaches and the fact that she had visible eye strain in the evening ( watery eyes, irritated)

Both my husband and I wear glasses... actually most of family wear glasses... so my daughter was quite delighted to get hers... sign that she is growing up lol And I don't regret buying them... not a single complaint of headaches since... except when she forgets them at home.

To choose the optician well chance had a good hand in it given that I was quite new in Singapore at the time...

Dr. Pauline Cheong in Gleneagles Medical Clinic is a children's opthalmologist Tel 64703342. You can also try Dr. Sharon Tow at the Singapore National Eye Center 62277255.

I took my daughter to an optician in one of the malls because she said she was getting blurred vision and he recommended that I take her to the eye clinic at KK Women and Children's hospital because he said that children need a more detailed eye exam than adults.

KK is a public hospital so although you still have to pay, it will be cheaper than the likes of Geneagles or Camden Medical centre.

The initial appointment took quite a while - about 2 hours because they were very thorough and we had to go and see several different people so if you go there, be prepared for that.

I just phoned them up and made an appointment, no need for a referral from our GP or anything.
