I work in the industry and yes you will not exactly get well paid here as a developer, IT related jobs here in Singapore haven't high status you are essentially treated as a factory worker. One HR manager in a former company I worked for claimed it costs about 2 months salary to replace a developer - it shows a lack of understanding for the profession which sad to say I think is common here.

That said, if you get a work in a bank doing software its another story, salaries there are generally much higher e.g. trading.

If I may add, yes, IT workers in R&D in this part of the world are generally under-appreciated. That is, even if--and that's a big 'if'--get exciting projects, the compensation isn't.

For some reason, engineers doing development work in South East Asia aren't a big deal as they are in more "western" settings. Sure there are exceptions, but the pay generally isn't as sexy, unless you go to management...which, most people in engineering don't want anyway.

India, actually shows a lot of promise because they pay their engineer more than enough to meet the standard of living as opposed to other countries, aside from the growing industry. Also, more actual research goes on, instead of the cookie-cutter engineering a room full of code monkeys are made to do in SE Asia. Of course, we're not exactly rushing into Bangalore because of local competition and it's not for everyone (hey, let's face it--people's preferences greatly vary).

Like $Pripps said, unless the company is in a financial field, IT doesn't pay as much as engineers would want, unlike in more "western" settings. This much I noticed when I was doing some light research into relative pay vs. standard of living per country. Most MNCs view SEA as a source of cheap labor not only in manufacturing but now also in tech support, QA and some light development work. Again, there are exceptions.

So why am I here? I couldn't find a better job anymore in my country when I've had it in my old one.

I rubbed my eyes in disbelief and read every word of SMS's reply carefully and still couldn't believe it :)

he did say "mostly." judging from the e-mails i received from india and the search results i got when i was doing my job hunt, singapore has very, very few opportunities in actual development work. statistically, OP has better chances of landing a job he'd actually like in india.

True that not much actual development work takes place here. But the fact that no consultancy and design work takes place in SG is not true......
